I think it would be fun to enter a contest like this. My freestyle is not very styley and I think I could at least make a showing in KBX, wave or downwinder events. Also, I don't have any personal experience to say one way or another WRT Forse except in talking to some people I know around here, but the event does sound unorthodox for the reasons mentioned above. I like that someone trying to start an event tho, I've tried to create some ground level enthusiasm for a coastal event.

Is there usually large entry fees for events (as an example, this event was $15 entry and it was apparently well thought out with demos, instructions, etc. http://www.outdoornewswire.com/v/current/htdocs/etc/sa.php/63617465676f72794e616d653d4b697465626f617264696e672663617465676f72794c6162656c3d4b697465626f617264696e67266c6f636174696f6e3d323030372f30312f313137303236383433352672737349643d34343835)? I'd like to see at least a few gear sponsors, bands, etc for legitimacy. Winds are also a bit more guaranteed after July 4th around here, even if the waves may not be as large. Seems like a kiteboarder, or kiteboard shops, or kiteboard manufacturers could help promote and enhance exposure for a kite event where there is guaranteed wind, waves, and flatwater (that doesn't depend on tide)... think Naish's Pistol River event. Now that would be some sweet ass shit mank!!! Twisted Evil Big waves, nukin wind and Floras for the KBX/freestylin - I'd travel and spend some $ fo that but I'll probably opt out of this one - MD weekend is a busy one for us here.

sorry to not let this die but on the other forum its alive and pimpin'.

Well are any of the invites for Oregonians??

I don't know of one local rider up and down the whole coast that is happy for the exploit of thier spots to a bunch of californians.

stay away with your sell out commercialization.

we support our spots by keeping it real ...., real empty.

our surfers really don't want the amount of kites already hovering around.

magizines saying that areas are mecca that really are crap who does that support?

keep it in cali. your waves and wind are much better....

my new position after my 4th day on the coast this year.

There are a lot of idiots kiteboarding these days---
and any event could just prove to be a totally embarrassing turnout of pro wannabes and/or 2nd year kiters trying to get their mug on the news.

Our sport had more attraction in the early days---- when kites didn't relaunch ---and Jeff Tobias landed on the rocks at the gorge games.

Not sure what the desire is to win a kiteboarding event IN THE SURF?

Seems completely abstract to try and judge anything other than height of jumps or wake style tricks which are totally defined.

I don't think most Oregon kiters think much about the art of riding the wave?
I see a lot of toting. A lot of pullers just edging on a wave?
Not a lot of strapless surfing with a depowered kite----I.E.
Downlooping for a depowered bottom turn,
Downlooping off the top for a depowered off the lip.

And I don't see anyone in Oregon riding longboards in light wind.
So it's really not there yet in our region.
Maybe blowhard sees more progression?

My wife and I may show up and watch the carnage from the beach.
..

yea Scott, wave riding is a whole nother beast that takes just as long as learning to kite in the first place.

I just got back from Punta San Carlos, and I saw at least 3 different styles of wave riding there, and that was one waist to chest high waves.

I like the depowered kite, let go of the bar, and just surf style of wave riding. At least that's what I found fun.

So far, pro line up includes (subject to receiving reg forms/etc):

Ben Wilson
Ben Meyer
Sky Solbach
Jesse Richman
Kevin Steene
Rocky Chatwell
John Van Malsen
Chip Wasson
Jacob B.(best)
Dave Broome
Bruce Eliashof
Poul Schiebel
Peter Schiebel
Brendan Richards
Casey Campbell
Peter Trow
Jeff Kafka
Anthony Chavez
Chris Gutzeit

You're right Scott. It's going to be tough to judge the surf. So many variables but it's got to start somewhere right? Jeff Kafka is coordinating judges/event formats and has a lot of resources to call on from surf/kite. He also brings perspective as a competitor as he competes in both disciplines. Rob Russo is providing the local knowledge. So I hope the event is blessed with swell, wind and good vibes.....

Thanks Marina.
I had no idea Jeff Kafka was involved and those riders were coming. Should be a good show. When I first started kiting I envisioned a contest at the main park in downtown Lincoln City would be a spectator hit. The tourists are going to love it.

Thats probably what the mayans said in 1519 Wink

The only constant in this young sport is going to be change and crowding. When theres a contest or on a long weekend when the masses show up, I can go ride some other place or hide in the hills knowing that I just rode 5 days in a row with a few friends. And if it gets too crowded, theres always whitey to thin things out. Shocked

Is that list of Pro's the list that has gotten an invite or the list that has said they are coming?

From what I understand, both. They were invited and some have submitted reg forms/payments and others have given verbal nods. But I am not organizing, only trying to support it by getting info....

I'm sure a formal list will be released once Jeff has it nailed down....

I think its great that we are having different venues to play in. I hope the event comes off as a huge success! I dont understand the local mentality.....

Kiteboarding is a brotherhood... Keep the stoke alive.

So out of the invites who's actually registered, it seems to be a pretty uneven field in terms of on one end you have Ben Wilson who's one of the best wave kiters out there to some of the unknowns.
