I think that hydrogen is a big answer. I recently watched a show where a guy had a large solar array that powered his home and with the surplus power, he generated hydrogen gas (water and electrophoresis) which he stored in tanks. Well shit, just watch the video...

He warms his house and drives all he wants on the power of the sun..

So they stated that it was a substantial cost to install that. I would love to know how long it will take to get the ROI out of that.

he got allot of grants to build that stuff..over half of the cost. I love when everyone brings up the "how long will it pay for itself" thing. As if everyone is SOOOOOO financially savy that every purchase is based on its ability to pay for itself. Since when does your freaking house pay for itself anyways?

As technologies become more available, economies of scale will fall into place. My last cell phone was free when I signed up for 2 years. How much was a cell phone fifteen years ago?

Yeah I was recently researching this for solar shingles to redo my parents roof. There's a calculator site and I think it was not going to pay off before it needed replacement - given the electric rates in our area (Salem) are some of the lowest around.

The real question is how MUCH more are you going to pay by installing solar vs staying w/ coal fired & then balance that cost against your degree of environment concern & the coolness factor of having solar power!

Bhahahaha! I love you PMB!

Used to work with this German dude when I was on the Micro$oft campus consulting. We were walking to the cafeteria when this H2 cut us off in the parking lot. The German dude yelled at the guy "Sorry about your Dick!!!" in a heavy accent which made it way more funny.

ohhh I see, so you don't have to pay your mortgage anymore? You just send them a recent appraisal and say "see, its worth than I paid for it".

BTW, don't you live under a bridge? Everyone told me you were homeless and used the computers at the library all winter in order to stay warm?

On my home I have 3KW of Solar. Years ago I figured the payback at under 20 years given that energy rates do not climb (optimisms?). Given that they have a 25 year warranty I figure that is not bad. I go to SOL West Solar Festival in John Day Oregon and I have seen panels there that were bought surplus from the forrest service that are over 30 years old and still producing at thier rated output. The same technology has been deployed in space for similar periods of time without failing. I would bet on my solar array outliving me and I'm planning on being around for a while.

As stated the ROI only works if you factor in environmental cost (those that would otherwise be passed on to your grandchildren), or if you take out the huge subsidies that have been given to fossil fuel and nukes which dwarf all subsidies in renewables (or of course the coolness factor).

And my highest electric bill in the past year has been $25 for a 3 bedroom 2 bath suburban home.

So as long as we are pimping all things solar, here are some good links..

portland OSD solar now home page with info on solar classes, tours, etc etc.
http://www.portlandonline.com/OSD/index.cfm?c=edehi

super cool solar calculator that shows you costs, available rebates and tax savings (currently worth $10,000) with LOTS of cool links on the calculator page: http://www.energytrust.org/solar/residential/calculator.html

Okay when we are pimping solar...

My cottage uses Solar as main power (I refuse to install regular power). My grandfather installed the first panel in late 70ties early 80-ties (I think)...the technology is still maturing, but only when we start looking at late part of early adoptation patterns ie. crossing the chasm
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossing_the_Chasm ) can we speak of ROI in terms of monetary values...and only then will the technology really become cheaper. This is the way it is, and have always been...it is has been mentioned before economies of scale. I think we are about to hit that threshold...where enough people understand what the technology can do for them.....

Anyhoo, it it's mind numbing to see how many people who does NOT have solar in Hawaii.

Also if you are interested and have a business...a friend of mine will hook you up. If I remeber correctly; they will pay for the solar panels..put it on your roof, produce the solar and charge less than what you would have had to pay in electric bills...and their per KWh will not increase....and you get a tax write off. I think they are mostly interested in bigger customers thn homes right now though...but who knows. How about that for ROI. Things are happening for sure.

A.

I think this would be my next kite car, if I could buy one in the states:

http://blog.wired.com/cars/2008/03/bmw-118d-wins-w.html

WTF?! Hopefully with the new diesel low sulphur requirements, these will pass U.S. emissions and become available.
