That is 25$/ round trip PDX to HR, and 36$ to Seaside if you avg. 20 MPG . Estimating about 15$/ Sauvies trip . Going to have to do more car pooling I guess .

Maybe this summer if gas is $4 a gallon, I can finally justify the cost of a bike + insurance. |
Getting there will be part of the fun. It is a blast.

Gas was $3.57 for regular yesterday in California. Up in Big Sur in Gorda, it's $5.25 already! I'm getting a motorcycle!

BBC has an article if you need some grounding:
How oil reached $100+ a Barrel
We all know it's overvalued, the supply went up today, but so did the price. Economics will eventually take over speculation.

Yah, ya got a point there Blanco…
On the other hand, I may see an “In” to justify the Sidecar...
Now I just have to decide if I want to 1) beat everyone to the launch, 2) go in style or 3) be able to access the “secret” launches…

Time to buy a scooter with racks for driving to Sauvie's this summer. Oh wait, then I'll have to leave Onad at home with the baby! |
Tonski,
You just carried that baby around in your stomach for 9 months, Dano will be happy to stay at home while you go kiting. |

before i learned to kite i used to think that the bicycle was the abosoute pinnacle of western technology. . .until we can kite to work, i remain a velocipedist at heart.
the answer to rising gas prices, and believe me there will come a day very soon when we look at $4 a gallon and long for the good ole' days, the answer is not as easy as scooters and carpooling.
we are the leaders in this. forget wahington. blaming bush is like beating off-it has its attraction but in the end offers no satisfaction.
every time we get in our car and drive around with just our own sorry asses and 100 cubic of air, WE are the problem.
every time we drive when we could have walked or rode our bike or taken public transit, WE are the problem.
everytime we choose the outdated and globally toxic practice of living in one community and driving to another to work or play, WE are the problem.
if we are serious when we say we love our childern and value life, we must embrace another way, and scooters and bicycles and biofuels all mya play a part.
but the major issue IMHO is our attitudes and laziness. these are hard things to change.
or we all can just sit around and beat off. . .

Its pretty simple: China & India are driving up demand for Oil. That and with the dollar in the toliet, boom: $4 a gallon. We keep sending our money overseas, they are getting richer and richer and have more buying power, and now they all want cars and A/C (the American Dream in Asia.)
Plus oil is like gold, in limited supply, and it can't be fabricated. So as long as we are dependent on it you can expect it to go up in price.

This isn't really the problem. Keep in mind that of all the vehicles on the planet, half of them are here in the US, which when you think about it is really staggering.
You're right about the declining dollar. Its also the fact that in America we refuse to change our consumption rate and continue to manufacture cars that get the worst gas mileage on the planet... and lots of people WANT these cars/trucks/suv's. One disturbing trend is that when gas prices spike, we tend to cut back on other expenditures rather than our fuel consumption. I've met plenty of people who just swear that no matter how much gas costs, they will not give up driving their monster "stomper" SUV. Its just too much a part of their persona. We drive a Suzuki Swift, and its amazing how much you fit in it if you're willing to have the passager sit behind the driver so that you can fold the seat down and use the full length of the car.
Eventually things will stabilize for a bit, probably when gas hits between $5-$6 per gallon. Then people will really start taking things seriously, and avenues for new technologies like hydrogen fuel cells will open up and hopefully become available to the general public. One thing for sure, the days of cheap road travel are over. If you're going to drive any distance, its going to cost you.
