corn oil for fuel instead of frech fries.

that can't be good for anyone. Twisted Evil

had to use canola oil out of the pantry to reprime my fuel system after changing my fuel filter. Didn't seem so toxic splashing vege oil around as opposed to gasoline .

localize

biofuels have gotten some bad press lately... brazil is burning down more rain forest to grow crops for biofuel... kind of counteracts the whole zero net c02 effect when you burn down rain forest.

farming is pretty rough on the environment too... we can blame a lot of river pollution on farming.

solar, wind, and a dash of nuclear power I think. then grab one of these as your kite car (I am sure it could make it out onto the jetty registered Wink ):

Yeah Tesla's ain't cheap ... was just foolin.

Hopefully it opens the door for cheaper technologies.

The Chevy Volt is coming, I think that's supposed to be less than $40k.

I still think China & India are the biggest risks to oil consumption worldwide.

This to me is flawed thinking, and quite arrogant though I know that isn't your intention at all. What I mean is, how can you point the finger at China and India and say "hey, when you people start buying cars and filling them up with gas, you're making it more expensive for our people to fill their gas guzzling SUV's!". For the US to complain about gas prices is just absurb. We're doing nothing to reduce the cost of fuel, or lower consumption rates, in fact, this current administration seems set on doing exactly the opposite; allowing big tax breaks for people who drive over-sized vehicles. As Americans, how can we frown on the rest of the world for just wanting to be able to drive cars, just because it makes it more expensive for us to wantonly waste fuel? If we're so independent, lets get off the gas, develop our own energy resources, and let someone else be addicted to oil. The problem is, right now, its cool to own a big SUV or truck, you're a wimp if you don't drive a V6 or V8. We want our 4x4s with oversized tires so we can drive 80mph down I-84 getting 12mpg. I'm not saying you in particular, but just the general attitude. Yes, China and India have large populations, but VERY SMALL when you're talking about how many people own and drive cars, compared to here in the US. Even smaller when you think of how much gas each individual is using. You're asking some poor fucker who's just trying to drive his moped to market or, another guy who's just trying to keep gas in his 4 cylinder 50+ mpg sub compact not to drive so the rest of us here in the US can chugalug cheap gas for our over-sized SUV's. Who needs a friggin Ford Extended cab, jacked up V12 or whatever to get from Portland to the sandbar? The fact is, when it comes to oil prices, we're the problem. If we just cut back our useage by 10%, it would result in a HUGE adjustment in oil prices, but we seem unwilling to do so. Heres a pic of a van made in China, that gets better than 40mpg, and over there costs less than $6000. Its not available here in the US... why not? Aren't we supposed to be a country leading the future? If so, why do we produce cars that get the worst gas mileage, not the best?

Dang Slipin maybe quote the whole post. Just saying China and India might someday want the same quality of life we now enjoy, and that would drive oil consumption up in those countries thus depleting oil availability worldwide driving up prices.

I agree though, we consume too much for a relatively small population. Its a side affect of being a rich country I think. Only thing is we are shipping more money and jobs overseas so who knows how much longer we'll be able to afford to live the way we do with our buying power as a country dropping.

Reggie keeps saying "localize" and its true unless we want to flatten quality of life curve across all borders, we may want to re-think "globalization"... or we can just sit tight and hope it all works out.

but yeah I agree consume less... and I walk to work... and drive a small car.

Very Happy

man I need another beer.

tesla type electric would work great. Put up a wind generator while we ride to recharge while riding. The jetty eats cars alive. The salty splashes eat the car from the inside of the door out. Don't put boston pros in the beach car doors Crying or Very sad . Each day on the way home the outside gets powerwashed(more envirodestruction).

my vw is underpowered with a 1600 with a turbo.

the 800 cc van may have to draft me, Laughing

I have a 600 cc enduro suzuki but its nice to be in an enclosed cockpit with heat after a coastal ride. heat on the feet. plus car pooling and animals need to come to the launch to shit all over and piss on gear.(more envirodestruction)

I may have to buy some bulk fuel ,cubies now to secure my summer price for the beach commutes. It takes me 3+ gallons to round trip house to launch almost 150 miles round trip.

I bought an old sailboat in Portland and am planning on living aboard near Hood River, Lyle, and Rufus. Very Happy That should save on gas consumption. Ya'll will have to come aboard for a beer or 12 sometime.

Now I just need to get my 7 mpg, dying, jacked-up 15 passenger van to Portland from Jackson Hole. Sad

Buying such a ridiculous rig seemed like a good idea when gas was $1.50 a gallon. I remember $0.89 cent gas a decade ago in Minnesota. Glory days.

If anyone wants the van (assuming it makes it to Portland) it will be abandoned somewhere on Tomahawk Island. The keys will be in the ignition but you'll have a hard time registering it without the VINs. I'd sell it but think my karma couldn't handle putting such a burden on someone else... it really is a piece of shit.

I'm looking forward to hanging out with you NW kiters. See you soon.

pay off your debts it is our weak dollar that has the gas prices so high. The rest of the world prices have not done what ours has . Its the rate of the dollar dropping over the years.

I'm going to use the George Castanza approach to do the opposite of what you think you should be doing and see if that works.

I just put a down payment down on a ford F450 V-10 truck.

Looks like gasoline and oil are being hoarded like gold, silver, etc.

"Gasoline stockpiles in the U.S. are at a 15-year high and attention on Wednesday will focus on the latest snapshot of supplies."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/18/AR2008031801088.html

give it another 10 years - nano-lithium-ion batteries will make gas mostly obsolete and we'll be driving grid power. (hydro + wind + solar here, coal power lots of other places).

I think a sliding scale gas tax might help, revenue to be used for alternative energy research.

Buy up to 8 gallons of gas: 0 tax

Up to 10 Gallons: $.50 per Gallon on entire purchase ($5.00)

Up to 12 Gallons: $1.00 per Gallon ($12.00)

Up to 15 Gallons: $2.00 per Gallon ($30.00)

Above 15 Gallons: $4.00 per Gallon ($60.00 and up)

This way, those who conserve pay nothing. Those who desire can avoid the tax by filling up more often. Those who insist on driving gas guzzlers can finance the research necessary to possibly solve this mess. Such a tax will make it either very inconvenient or very expensive to drive SUVs on a daily basis.

My 2 cents anyway.
