the US taking leadership on green energy. Take or leave the political parts of course, but it seemed share worthy, especially the bit about wind power, Vestas/Denmark, and the Carter years forward.

$1.71 in Brownsville, $1.95 in SPI. Pretty interesting to see how much price can vary across a pretty small geographic area. Go to www.gasbuddy.com, select map prices and enter the area you are looking for. You can often save 15 to 20 cents a gallon by being picky which station you choose.

Hedge funds gone wild! Oil was overbought now oversold. Oil is down because everything is down.

See graph posted earlier... we are about at 2005 cost of oil, which is still 3 times 1996.

Don't worry they are just giving your anus time to recover before they begin round two Very Happy .. OPEC will make sure of that.

But current prices are good news, will probably help the economy bounce back faster.

Oh yeah its a good time to buy oil stocks, some energy trusts yielding 15-20% or more even when pricing in decline. You can still love the environment and make money off of gas guzzlers Very Happy

Keep in mind gas isn't the only thing oil is used for. Petrochemicals are everywhere, including the plastic bags we double-bag at Safeway and WalMart then throw into the trash to pollute the bodies of water we surf in. I agree with shastadogs2, it's behavior that drives the consumption problem. Recognizing cause and effect of our bad habits is hard enough, let alone the effort to correct them. I'm just as guilty, but trying to reuse more than recycle, shun paper/plastic bags when my cloth ones are sitting in the back seat (force myself to walk out and get them when I forget), and walk or ride a bike whenever I can (even when it's rainy or chilly; tough to get used to). And yes, you can carry a kite and board on a bicycle... (locally, anyway).

Take a look at recent events in the oil-rich Port Harcourt region in Nigeria, a primary competitor to Venezuelan and Arabian oil. Production reduced because of militants demanding wealthy oil companies put money into the local economy. Production there bottomed prior to oil hitting $125/bl and global pressure on OPEC to increase Arabian supply (which they were restricting, Venezuela also being not so competitive due to politics). More recently, about the time I saw gas at $1.65/gallon near SPI, BBC reported that the offshore rigs the oil companies built to help counter kidnappings and sabotage had come online and production was back up. Coincidence? Maybe, but it illustrates the complexity of global supply and demand and the many factors beyond our consumption, which at least we have control over.

Sorry if I sound preachy, by the way - I get cranky when the wind's not blowing...

It is amazing to me that we are still on this topic after prices have been cut in half.

Looking at my new challenges in the economy and the housing market, I wish I could go back to bitching about how expensive gas was.

"It is amazing to me that we are still on this topic after prices have been cut in half."

That's kinda the point; people don't think anything is a problem until it becomes their own problem. Just because gas isn't $4/gallon this month doesn't mean we're no longer using too much oil.

And I'm right there with you on the economy. I lost my full-time job a few months ago and have some part-time work until January when I'm moving to another state to find work.

Good luck to you!

I've got this application for my phone that grabs your gps coordinates and searches for the surrounding gas prices. sorts by lowest price/shortest distance. it's called GasBot for the G1 phone.

speculation with free advertisement from your local news drove the price up up up .

sending more of your money out of the country, how long could that last , your money our biggest export.

then many many monthes ago they speculated the RECESSION after scaring the sheep into that trend here we are....

hope this gets spun in the right direction or our dollar is going to tank. the paper its printed on will be devalued buy the US mint by making it into dollars.

not great times to be slackin at work ... you may get the axe....

employers are lookin to trim any fat these days.

Shay maybe the big financial crisis was the over inflated economy the years prior , this was just a busted bubble

lower gas prices should help some profits added to lower payrolls. Wink

these lower prices are a sham.

they are below production costs for some producers.

as soon as the economy starts picking up some steam oil will go back up to $150-200 per barrel

oil drilling well projects are being shelved.

so when oil prices rise again , they will do so with a vengeance.

What we need is for gas to go way up in price again to spur investment in oil projects and in fuel efficient cars and alternate energy.

low fuel prices do not get any of projects that are nessesary done

"these lower prices are a sham."
Oil plunged almost $5 to $48.85/barrel. How is that a sham? CHEAP gas so we can spend less $$$ seeking wind is a good thing.

"they are below production costs for some producers."
Really?? I would be interested to see your source of info. If it is true, than they can absorb the cost for a while. Recently they were selling oil for almost $100 more than they are now. I think Exxon will be able to afford short term losses.

"as soon as the economy starts picking up some steam oil will go back up to $150-200 per barrel"
It depends on supply and demand. It was never $150 to $200

"oil drilling well projects are being shelved. "
Of course, what would you expect?

"so when oil prices rise again , they will do so with a vengeance."
Not necessarily. It will be based on supply and demand.

"What we need is for gas to go way up in price again to spur investment in oil projects and in fuel efficient cars and alternate energy."
I would like to see these things happen too, but, I think it is better to let it happen organically by letting the market determine when alternative energy sources make sense.

"low fuel prices do not get any of projects that are nessesary done. "
Necessary by what standard? If the market is not demanding new projects then how are they necessary? Why should any investor spend money if there isnt a good return on their investment?

Gas under $2.00 will be a great relief to the common man and will help soften the blow of our current economic situation. I hope it goes to $20 a barrel, but, forecasters are predicting oil to settle in the $40's for a while.
