Letter to the Editor
The Naitos have stirred up a divisive hornet's nest of controversy by continuing to sell the idea of cable wakeboarding in the Nichols Boat Basin. Mr. Naito freely admits that in order to build his hotel he is courting money from China. The Chinese are not stupid and insist on guaranteed rents from the complex before they release any funds. The Naitos are not from the area. They do not live here nor do they participate in any of the activities that support our community. It is a simple sales pitch to take the money and run. Pitting members of the community against each other is an ugly manipulative tactic as old as society itself. By using their power to create a win lose set of options for our community they are showing us who they are. Make no mistake about it. Boardheads, you are being played like a violin. Wake up. |

Ah Laurie... We are not that naive... No matter what their base motives are, the cable park is also a positive addition for us... and actually, for the Hood River area...
I also paddle board and kayak, but the basin is not even close to the best area in Hood River for either of those activities... And the habitat arguments don't hold water in regards to a human built feature that was used as a toxic dump.
If it goes in, I will personally be purchasing a pass... |

The fact is, I really hate their crummy hotel. It is beyond ugly and it doesn't have a bar. |

So why are you allowing the hotel to be put in with little to no protest while choosing instead to fight the cable park???? _________________ I heart dangling |

The hotel is a done deal. It is allowed under the code. The whole deal is a mess. I hate watching people sling mud at each other. |

I completely agree Jon, pass and a sick board would still be cheaper than a SUP.
I would disagree that the Naito's are pitting community members against each other. People have different opinions on things, that's a fact of life. I think that the Naito's have done a great job at consulting with community members and local business owners before presenting this idea to the public.
To me a cable park fits with Hood River and the boat basin is a great place for one. The friends have done a great job of trying to make it look like the boat basin gets hundreds of visitors a day but I don't see those numbers in the basin when I observe it on a daily basis, usually the number of people in the area that the cable park would take up is closer to zero.
Cable park goes in and whats the worst that could happen? It tanks and gets removed, the basin goes back to the way it was, which I highly doubt would occur due to the success that cable parks have and the amount of outdoor enthusiasts that Hood River attracts. _________________ BIP- "YOUR GIRLFRIENDS FAVORITE" |

I was pretty appalled by the email that Big Winds sent to me for their "Float in" for support of opposing the Cable Park. Gee, I wonder what would happen if cable park supporters stopped buying stuff from their store? Not cool to fuel the flames of the community divide. Pretty bummed as I like that store -but this just steams me. They should just stay out of it. It's obvious they are in support of The opposition because they sell SUPS & have a location at the Event Site.
I have a hard time saying "Friends of Nichols"...Seems like they are more like the anti-fun group. And that name was made up by some lawyer. Pretty manipulative. _________________ Be kind to Kooks |

I don't think Big Winds is trying to fuel any flames of community divide. They are probably just trying to save a piece of their business that operates there. Do you expect existing business owners to just lay down and give up something they've carved out just because some people think it would be fun to have a cable park where they currently operate? What would you do if you operated a business there now?
Isn't the same thing (business gain) motivating some of the proponents as well? |

Mel, can you share the email from big winds?
Ditto with your assessment. I really like Big Winds but would be really disappointed if they're throwing their name in the hat of anti-cable park.

I am confused. Even with the cable park why can't Big Winds, Brians and Kayak Shed still operate? The north end will still be usable. Big Winds can sell a few wakestyle boards & boots and while the teenagers are cabling, Ma & Pa would probably like to Sup. These little businesses shouldn't be so closed minded. Embrace change and expand. _________________ Slingshot | Ride Engine |Try before you buy | PM me

I feel that Big Winds, and anyone else who may oppose, or support the cable park has a right to express themselves, and if they have access to a user group that may feel the same, then by all means they should contact them. While I am personally for the cable park, I do not see this as an "Us against Them" issue. It isn't to me, anyway.
I will personally continue to shop at Big Winds, regardless of the stance the shop takes on this. They are a local business, and as such, should have the right to weigh-in.
