I did some searching a while back, and just looked again; I didn't see this post before I posted the great white caught article, bloops Evil or Very Mad, but I actually haven't found any internets reports of shark attacks on kiters. Of course I would assume most kiters who are in the ocean stay standing most the time, and I doubt any shark would be interested in that; unless you've got one of those spinner boards... But I would image if "your kite is at 12'o and you are sitting there like a kook" then you probably look like a seal.

I have to agree with arkay on this one. I am sure you all have watch shark week and know they are bitting out of curiosity. Most attacks on swimmers and sufferers are mistaken identity although I have had a lot of thought about body dragging and thinking I look like bait. I also think that we are fast enough that they leave us alone most of the time (NAK I think was an anomaly) and they go after slow surfers and swimmers IMHO and limited knowledge of sharks.

Beware!!!!! There are sharks in the ocean.............

I think a shark attack on a kiter is possible, but incredibly unlikely. Some idiot I know was stupid enough to ride right into the middle of a shark's dinner & slow down to check out the seals. Clearly if the shark was interested in eating a kiteboarder that would have been a great opportunity. Sharks are very curious animals I've been told since, which explains the shark following said rider.

All of that said, it still makes sense to avoid situations that put you in close proximity to a feeding shark. Sharks are curious, and their teeth are their only means of tactile feedback. Most shark "Attacks" are just the shark mouthing the object of their curiosity. Unfortunately, that still has pretty grave consequences for the object of their attention. If you see seals or fish jumping, just leave the area.

they have gotten a few windsurfers over the years (though usually when they miss their duck tacks)

I read of one at Kanaha in 2000 - kite beach Maui

I posted this same response in different thread, but this thread seems to be where all the cool kids hang out, so I'm reposting it.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/outposts/2009/08/great-white-shark.html

In the LA times article linked above it states "Under both federal and state laws, taking or possessing a great white shark is illegal. "

WTF. They can eat us and we can't eat them? That's just wrong. I would eat a great white fish sandwich every day if I could. Fair is fair.

And what's all this whining about us invading their territory. I consider the surf my territory too. I'm willing to share if they are willing to stop biting. Otherwise, fuck them. I don't care if they are pretty / amazing or whatever. Bring on the harpoons. They started it.

-I just got back from Maui this past Sunday after one week kiting there. The day Trop. storm Felicia was scheduled to arrive we were kiting at Kanaha and the lifeguards came out on jet-skis to give us the news they were closing the beach b/c they had spotted an approx. 12 ft. tiger inside the reef. All this as I sat there with my 9m in the air at 12' o'clock since the wind had just completely DIED and I could not get on plane no matter how hard I sent the kite !! WTF.....I have never body dragged so damn fast, in my life. Didnt want to meet the Hawaiian landlord, just sayin ! Confused

I hear ya MasV. I was out at Kanaha on a double OH day trolling for nice sets. Dropped into a beauty and who do I see hanging out in the trough (just off the reef) a freaking big tiger shark, and I’m heading right that way, no turning around with a monster on my back. Just kept telling myself "don’t fall or you’re a high speed meat jig... "

Starting hearing the wake curing off my board, spin my head around to check for a fin, "don’t stuff the nose of the board, don’t stuff it…" Confused

Riding all the way back to the beach gave me time to calm down... "Ah shit, those waves are so sweet. Gota head back out. The Tiger probably headed down to the harbor to look for cruise ship garbage or mutated turtles by now anyway…" Wink
