That's an awesome story Nak! I grew up in Monterey, CA (near Santa Cruz) and have had one encounter with old whitey in my lifetime of surfing. They're not always looking for a meal...I think sometimes they're just curious (or else I wouldn't be around to tell the tale). Oh yeah, and if you see it, it probably saw you a long time ago Here's my story:

I was out surfing early in the morning on Christmas eve in pea soup fog...Obviously I was the only one in the lineup, in fact I was the only one at the beach (Hollytard: this does not mean it didn't happen...it means you're a douche). I was at a beach that has a kind of cloudbreak on bigger days, so the waves were breaking far enough offshore that you couldn't even see shore through the fog.

After about an hour of catching a few big sloppy waves I see a big set breaking way outside, so I start paddling out like mad to make it under. Just then I looked over and saw a huge shadowy mass riding down the wave, not pointed directly at me, but about 20 yards from me. I froze and turned to catch the wave, and as it got closer to me I could make out its massive head and dorsal fin...the rest of the shark's body past its fin blended in with the wave, but this mother was BIG!

Since the wave was already breaking well before I turned, I got launched over the falls and tumbled around for a good 30 seconds. When I felt a sharp pain on my leg I thought I was done for...turns out it was my fin hitting me, not the shark munching my leg off. After that set passed I was stuck in the middle zone between the cloudbreak and shorebreak...with a bleeding leg! Not wanting to draw attention, I just laid on my board with my hands and legs out of the water until another wave came through and rode it to shore. That was the LONGEST and SCARIEST minute of my life waiting for the next wave. I just imagined the shark circling around me getting ready to strike. But I made it to shore with just a nick on my leg...then called every # on my cell phone!

Sorry about the long post, just thought I'd share my story. And by the way, Holly-whatever, you can bitch as much as you want and tell me there's no way my story is true since you have never personally seen a shark, and suck it. You're lame.

I don't post here often (seattle-ite) but thought this was a worthy topic, plus I'm sure Nak wants to hear some more good whitey stories! By the way, my name's Nick Ward...not some troll...and if it makes you feel any better Holly???, I'm in my twenties, not some "old fat fuck"

It's funny, cause there's always sharks out there. I've flown over the ocean enough, it's amazing how many sharks you see from the air. It's an unreal emotional response when you see one up close; you realize you're not at the top of the food chain anymore. Even though Shark attacks are comparatively rare, just knowing that they can choose to eat you or not... Amazing

I'm glad I was on a kiteboard, and not paddling and bleeding ike you were! I probably would have shit my drawers!

Awesome dude, I would love to have a sighting of a Great White. As for the truth its all about being at the right place at the right time. I was in South Padre Island this weekend (getting skunked) When I left the wind picked up. (your welcome Joel) but my grandfather and I were swimming off the second sandbar, and all of a sudden it was raining little fish, right out of the water about 4 ft over our heads. Three large fish were driving the fish into a school and munching them. My grandfather had been in the South Pacific in the Navy for the entire WW2, swimming off the ships, off islands and in the water, after being sunk and never witnessed this behavior. So Nak was in the same situation with, dare say Larger fish and prey.

NAK , Glad the shark wasn't on a taste test .
I had a sighting while windsurfing at Longbeach ages ago . Saw the fin roll over ten feet in front of me. Jibed and fell in. Never waterstarted as fast a I did then and sailed in , shaken. My friend believed me because my pupils were so big. Land sailed the rest of the day.
Turned out it was most likely a huge sunfish that I disturbed and it just rolled over and dove flipping it dorsal out as it went down.
