edited based on Chooch's post that Bonnetti is not an official rep. (even though it does seem like he is)

hmmm.
there are other stakeholders out there... in fact from the Port's own website,
"Recreational opportunities are abundant at the Port of Hood River’s waterfront public access sites. The Port developed these sites for the local community as well as for visitors, supporting tourism and its economic rewards to the community. The waterfront is used for many activities, including watersports, dog walking, and fishing. Please be aware of the safety signage and be courteous to all users."
Further, dogs are specifically allowed off leash on the sandbar (admittedly, at certain times):
SECTION 6. Animal Control. No person shall permit any animal which is under their care or which they own to run at large, or to be on a leash on Port Property unless the person is holding the leash and in control of the animal. However, at the Hook dogs are allowed off leash one hour before and after sunrise and one hour before and after sunset, and at the Spit dogs are allowed off leash one hour before and after sunrise, if the Hood River County Dog Control ordinance which regulates dogs running at large allows a dog to be off leash and the person with the dog is in compliance with the provisions of the Hood River County Dog Control ordinance.
Think twice before you bitch to the port... it is in the nature of bureaucracy to massively overreact. A total ban on off-leash activity would be a likely result.
Finally, don't forget, most of the sandbar doesn't even belong to the Port!
Get over it.

wow, what a tragedy that would be.
I think the point of the thread has evolved to point out the obvious...if owners are responsible and dogs are under control, then there isn't a problem.

Yeah, I have gotta respond by saying that my gut got twisted when a F***n' boxer darted off the sand bank, hauling a** right at my kite. All I could do was stand petrified by the water's edge and prey he stopped, and he did, like a runner on first, sliding right into the side. *sigh* I could have strangled the owner.

I've seen lots of shenanigans from the mutts at the Spit over the years...
But the most unique was the other day when I saw a dog grab the handle of a brand new RPM and run off across the kiddie pool with it... dragging the kite along the way.
It was totally random. The owner was leaving with his gear all packed up and was way downwind across the kiddie pool. The dog just randomly ran back up and grabbed the "stick".
Well the dog owner and kite owner knew each other and he basically said "sorry dude" and kept walking without checking on the kite. No damage to the kite but the dog did tangle the lines something fierce.
Let's make a "naughty dog" area and tie the bad ones up if there is no owner around to take responsibility.

It is really too bad that the dog thread each year is always the same bitching and moaning. When I see the dogs run at me and around, sometimes they scare the shit out of me, but they always look so happy and having so much fun. I sure hope all the dog owners take responsibility for their pets so it doesn’t ruin it for everyone who is doing the right thing.

Hello All,
I would like to take this time to announce a new event I will be hosting at the spit:
Starting June 1st every year, we will have daily dog races around the waters edge at the Spit. We welcome all you kiteboarders to lay your kites down in the sand so that our contestants can endure in the challenge of hurdling your kite(feel free to take a picture). Winners will receive a brand new kite chew toy.Thank you to all of our participants in advance and we look forward to pooping in your dirt.
What's up now?!

Whoa. Didn't need to see that! Just to confirm, by definition Phil's not gay, as he's married to someone of the opposite sex. What does it take to get a thread locked around here???
(BTW, funny post H.R. )
