yep, every year there is a post about:

- what kite should I buy?
- don't let your dogs run loose
- your dog bit me (because it was running loose)
- there sure are a lot of kooks on the sandbar
- i got skunked at Sauvie

it's obvious that the people letting their dogs run free on the spit really don't give a flying F about your kite, lines, or your unpunctured skin, posting it here just keeps the posting streak alive another year. Unfortunately, it is going to take an enforced leash law to do something about it.... which ruins it for non-kiting days, etc...

you can't really blame the dog for wanting to run around and chase big things moving around....

When people leave their dog at the spit and go kiting they start running around in packs and doing what dogs do. When people kite they typically do not see their dog do anything--good , or not so good. If a dog happens to be the 1/100 that does not that's great. Those folks should feel free to ignore this "Gay" post.

Cool I'll ingore this gay post!!!!!

Don't really care to read about all the retards that had a dog put a hole in their kite and did nothing about it!!!!

Next time I see someone step on my kite or snag my line or piss on the sand bar I'll post up and bitch about it cool!!!!! Thumb's Up

Be a responsible pet owner.

Yes there is a law on the Hood river books.... Dogs must be on a leash during daylight hours on the sandbar.

It's not just about the kites, it's about the dog's welfare too. I personally love to see dogs running around having fun, it's a kick. But the dogs need to be supervised by their owners. Last year I was leaving the spit as two dogs chased some critter up and on to the freeway. One dog came back. The owner of that dog obviously cared not a whit for the dogs welfare, only his own fun.

Dropping a dog off somewhere & then taking off is not fair to the dog, or to anyone else for that matter.

Like Brett said, its just that time of year again. A few new observations from a new dog owner:

- I totally agree that dogs should be leashed when around kites and without their owner supervision

- The sandbar has become a dog park of sorts, we were out there a lot this winter and some days the parking lot was half full just with people running their dogs. For this reason I'd be careful trying to get dogs completely banned from the sandbar, it might end up backfiring on kiters.

- The dog owners I see out there in the winter are very responsible and always mind their dog.

- You have to know your dog and how its going to act and control it accordingly. If your dog is a spaz and barks and runs around crazy, then maybe leave it at home. If your dog will be mellow and chill tied up on a leash and basically be stationary, then I don't see much harm in having your dog out there.

- Before you go out kiting exercise your dog, a tired dog is a good dog.

There already is a law in place. Just there is no enforcement.

Bonetti, you don't spend much time on the Sandbar, your dog is tiny and couldn't put a hole in a kite with a paw if it tried, and I'm sure his little turds just disappear into thin air cause he's so small. You really are on the wrong side of this issue. Smile

We are facing a real problem at the Sandbar from large dogs. It sucks, and there is little we can do about it short of calling the Sheriff. Who wants the cops down there? I know I don't.

The solution we came up with last year was to just take some rope down to the Sandbar with you and tie the dog up to a log.
