There's always a few that ruin it for the rest. I think the problem lies more with the owner's than the dog's. We always have our dog at our beaches and never have a problem. Most beaches I would argue that dog's are fine but in this case I can understand the problem, the sand bar is very busy and most that kite there are less experienced which can cause a problem. As a general rule I love letting our dog off leash while we kite and hope this wouldn't become a popular policy at other beaches. _________________ Learn, Love, Live.... |

I kind of agree but at the same time, I think it is an important discussion. Unfortunately some folks seem to want to act like 14 yo's (bonnetti) and say the discussion is gay when clearly, it is not gay when a dog tears holes in your kite or gets tangled in your lines, or you step in a pile of dog shit...that is not gay, its lame. VERY lame.
This is a really tough subject as not all dogs are created equal just like dog owners. I've seen gmans poodle pretty much chillin all day and I've seen Yoda nervously shivering and basically being neurotic but in the end, completely harmless. On the other side of the coin, you have some dogs that are going completely ape shit running all OVER the place, and my favorite, standing in place and barking and barking and barking and barking and barking and barking at all the kiters.
PKH has a good point, in the winter, its chill because its not that crowded. In the summer time though... its a completely different story. Its already a zoo, do we need to add animals as well? If dogs are damaging equipment and increasing risks, then my take is that something should probably be done about it, at least during the busy summer months. The bottom line is the sand bar is used for kiting during the summer, it is not a dog park...period. I like dogs that are well behaved and have had many over the years. I loathe those that are not, mostly because an unbehaved dog is simply a sign that the owners have no clue how to train and take care of an animal.
People should be able to do whatever the hell they want as long as it doesn't effect others. you want to drink beer? fine with me..what do I care. You can smoke crack on the sand bar as long as you don't mess with my stuff. The problem is that some dogs create serious problems for others and the owners are not there to deal with it. What am I supposed to do if some dog takes a shit or rips my kite and the owner is not around? Spend my afternoon holding the dog and waiting for the owner? Unfortunately, it comes down to having some rules and correct me if I'm wrong, most rules and laws don't come with qualifying conditions. "you have to pay to park here, unless your just going to be like 3 minutes". " No admittance after dark, unless your not really hurting anything". Its yes or no. You can have dogs on the sand bar or you simply cannot have dogs.
Let that decision be made after observing the actions of dogs over the course of the summer. Dog owners should probably be aware that it is THEIR ACTIONS THAT WILL GET DOGS BANNED , not because some people are "dog haters". Play with your dogs all you want on the sand bar when your their. Going in the water, put your dog on a leash. If you are of the mindset that its not fair to have your PET on a leash, you should remember that it is not fair to other PEOPLE to have them run free. I realize people get attached and pets are a "member of the family" just don't forget that they are, indeed, just animals. |

They seem to be mostly coming from one person so I just banned him. I would have just deleted the posts and called it a day, but this wasn't really the first time. |

| If you have a lot of trouble with dogs at the Sandbar, you should consider my approach... 20 feet of cheap rope. |

| very nice solution thank you. As to the problem It does need to be discussed and it should be rembered that it was used as a dog park before kiteboarding. So a totall ban may not work. The real problem is with kiters dogs when it is windy I doubt their are many non kiters out walking their dogs. |

Dogs rock. Responsible pet owners and Forum admins rock even more as they balance common sense and courtesy.
Also, kudos to whoever installed the Poop Bag Pole by the kite drying area at the Event site. Keeping it simple people. |

I think Lance has a point. This is a human issue. We just need to stop talking about this as a dog issue, and deal with human owners on a case by case basis through the proper channels.
My recommendation is to tie the dog up and call Hood River Sheriff Animal Control Unit: 541 386 2711. Program that number into your address book so you'll be prepared. |

sounds like a good small business opportunity for a non-kiter.
doggie daycare at the spit. "we take your dog of your hands and off your kite"
could have another small business opportunity like a kite guard. basically someone who would get in the line of fire between a dog and your kite.
I agree if the spit was a dog park back before kites that its probably morally wrong to ban dogs there.
still though. I think the responsibility lies with the owner.
lets face it. its just plane lazy and irresponsible to let your dog run wild through other people's stuff while you go do something else like....go kiting.
you wouldn't let your child out of your site around a bunch of dangerous kites. why on earth would you allow an animal to have that responsibility? Last edited by C Johnson on Wed May 20, 09 10:21 am; edited 1 time in total |

not exactly what I was thinking but definitely effective....
make sure you're up in the cliffs and have good camo. on second thought you're probably SOL no matter what considering there's an industry leading UAV manufacturer right across the river. they'll track you with Infa-Red |

Maybe we should turn Shawn Richmond onto this post and see how much longer this dude pimps for Wainman... At least his true colors are running thick on this post.

I think there's a chance bonetti could indeed be a dog.
I mean based off of the posts it looks like all higher level thinking is completely absent.
civilized logic, reason, understanding and being considerate for others all seem to be missing. |

Just to clear things up Bonetti does not ride for Wainman Hawaii, he is a shop rider down in california that happens to carry Wainman Hawaii.
I really am sorry about the way he acted...totally uncalled for. I hope everyone can look past this cuz that is not what Wainman Hawaii or myself as a rep are all about
