Not all monkeys are safety oriented.

fo makes some good points - really is important to be sensitive to friends and family

as far as helmuts go - fo is also right that ones with bills are potentially dangerous to your neck

that said - i've always worn one with a bill - probably a bad idea if you are throwing down powered tricks

have launched more than one surfboard and skim off it - that would have been really bad

you cheeky monkeys

Dude WTF??? I didn't know you know how to type unless it was in all caps! Laughing

Oh and by the way - I wear a helmet because I don't want my head to go crashing into some floating debris - like a log or some sh*t - or crashing into some kook or something that is in my way!!

physics is a bitch.

What fo is hinting at is that wearing a helmet helps against certain hazards and has a demonstrably negative effect on other hazards.

1. helmets protect against rapid deceleration of the skull by distributing the force of an impact thereby reducing localized trauma.

Translation: instead of cracking your skull wide open you get a concussion, and don't die. Probably.

2. Your head is a big bowling ball. Increasing it's diameter (which is really what most helmets do) increases its resistance to flow.

3. Your head wants to flow through the water when you land hard after throwing down. Resistance against that flow translates to increased deceleration. This effect is further compounded by something called a "moment arm". Increasing the diameter of an object increases the effective lever arm of the center of pressure versus the center of resistance (in this case, your cervical vertebrae).

Translation: a bill on your helmet increases your risk of breaking your neck.

Relative risk is the name of the game. A helmet might not have helped the guy who died and actually might have made things worse IN HIS CASE.

On the other hand, if you hit something hard, a helmet will save your life. Here in the gorge we don't really get the thunderstorm thing too much, people are at risk for impact. People. Rocks. Trees. Boats... fortunately, no turtles Smile

no one means any disrespect with there posts about helmets and weather safety.

It is actually spelled "their" to be exact. "There" refers to a place other than your present location; hence it has no place in this sentence/statement, let alone the lack of a capital "N" at the beginning of your sentence. In summary, your grammatical shortcomings do not add to your credibility.

Thanks,

I'd have to say that (Wink semicolon in Spike's line one is indefensible, a colon (Smile is the proper call when a prior statement is to be further refined--no biggie

Grammatical error is not so big a deal as inferring the deceased suffered from a lack of meteorological savvy, and or that plus the lack of a helmet was additional mitigation forgone, and so doubled the opportunity to down grade the tragic loss to some lack of wits on his part.

The attraction in kiting seems to be the ability to leave the water's surface, and has evolved into how contorted/tweaked you can get yourself while looping the kite though the power zone for max juice...

Now what the heck does any of this have to do with being careful? or concerned for your safety.

You pretty much have to have a reckless streak or you'd not be a kiter.

Yup, you guessed it, we ALL got "Shit for Brains"

I'm fine with that, any one of us could die today on our kites,it's easy to do--- what pisses me off is the use of the word safety to sell our thing to the unsuspecting...

Regards
fo

evidently putting punctuation in quotes make emotocons

i don't do emotocons so read ; and : in their place...

out

One more thing, they make soft nerf like visors that slip over your helmet like a head band...

no need to forgo the brim just make it a weaker thing than your neck.

I'm pretty sure most of us has had our bell rung so I don't see how anyone can expect this part of kiting change...

accept it, there's plenty risk that cannot be mitigated---end of story.

no way to make a proprer m-dash , sorry

data would be nice. with helmets being as lightweight as they are these days, the chances of a kiter breaking their neck wearing one are probably much less than the chance that they'll be knocked unconscious without.

hey fo can you put a pie chart or something together for us? pros and cons of anti stoke?

I used to wear a kayaking helmet that had a pretty slim profile and no bill, but I definitely noticed a more abrupt impact when hitting the water at high speed with the helmet than without. I would recommend not getting one with a bill if you're concerned about maximizing safety. Generally helmets are best when hitting hard objects such as land, or rocks in the river (for the kayakers), etc. You're probably right that overall it's still better to wear one even if only for water impact. Although in the waves I would prefer not to have one unless I'm riding a reef break.

Helmets?

I don't wear one...whatever, I've no opinion on that subject, do whatever you think is right.

This is my beef with safety monkeys and the point of this thread provided for me by sals 3764--thanks man

Yeah, that interview is a little gung-ho, but at least they summed it up by recommending lessons. And the target audience is Naples, Florida... have you seen the average age and lifestyle there? I doubt kiting's popularity will empty out the golf courses soon.

But why keep it on the down-low? The people who are going to get into it are going to get into it anyway - the best we can do is emphasize safe practices and recommend people take lessons instead of this guy saying "yeah, I learned the hard way, and you should too!". Myself, I'm only going into my second season of kiting, but I made the decision a long time ago not to get into it after trying to teach myself on the Columbia with a 2-line Wipika and 7'2" thruster. Now my friends have been into it for ages, and some of them design the safest kites on the market, and I've got plenty of teachers to tell me about safety and technique (let alone the professional lessons I took to get started).

Yeah, these days I'd say pretty much anybody CAN get into it. Telling people to shut up about safety conversations just doesn't make sense to me, though. (Not that I disagree with you entirely about that guy oversimplifying it - we should all have a healthy respect for the danger).

Speak for yourself about needing a reckless streak to be a kiter, though. Like it or not I'm a kiter now, and I have no immediate desire to do powered kite tricks, nor am I interested in buying equipment from a manufacturer who doesn't emphasize the safety aspects of their gear. I use common sense (as do most kiters I'm around) and prefer to stay away (or at least upwind) from the ones with obvious shit for brains.

See you on the water... I'll be the one dangling, wearing a helmet, with a great big smile on my face!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
