Makes sense that it was an Ozone.
What was the surfer supposed to do after the drop in? Not like he had much choice in terms of where to go. If he'd realized the kite was going to block him maybe he could've avoided dropping in all together. The question is why the kite was dropped there in the first place.

Sorry but that surfer had plenty of time to see the kite and get out of the way, so the safety issue is irrelevant. The kiter is a kook for messing up the line.

ha. good luck calculating whether you will or won't hit the kite 200yds away while dropping into triple overhead chopes. After he's in the barrel it's a choice between going over the falls or hitting the kite. Which would you choose?

I am calling the kiter a kook, for dropping a kite right in the middle of Teahupoo.
Pretty sure this video / article makes kiters look uber kooky and downright dangerous in the eyes of surfers everywhere.

No doubt, that surfer was speed bombing the only line that lead to safety. The article almost made it sound like the kiter intentionally plopped his kite there but there wasn't much detail.
No matter what it's not good for the perception of kiting. Could have been a lot worse.

Definitely not the surfer at fault here. I don't think my first thought as I'm getting whipped into a reef-draining set wave at Chopes would be "hmm let me look over my shoulder to check if there's any kites floating in the channel on the inside..."
Bummer that this happened at such a high profile spot-does not make kiters look good.

Who thinks its a good idea to fly a 13m race kite in triple over head waves?
That kite was destined to end up getting munched in a wave before it ever left the beach.
I wonder what the locals did to his car after this act of stupidity...

IMO the kiter was a kook who had no business being out there.

At first glance I thought that the Surf crew is more dramatic than the Windsurf crew but then I watched the full video without the dramatic music and "News at 11" clip. And, yeah, that guy is a douche and should be flogged. Thanks for giving all of us a bad rap Douche Canoe!

For those who have never made a kiting mistake - ever, throw the first stone.
Anyone charging Chopes at triple overhead has some big gonades.

Definitely the kiter is the kook. This does not weigh favorable for kitesurfing, sad to see.

After watching the full version video, it is pretty obvious the Tahitians take all the crazyiness in stride. Had that incident happened at one of the heavy spots in Hawaii like Pipe or Sunset, then there would have been a severe beatdown accompanied with the dropped kite in the lineup.
