Who is the Kook?
Please enlighten me |
Are you kidding? Have you ever been on even nice waves with some size? You cannot just choose to go where ever. When you ride at the speed the guy is, and there is one out and one that leads to annihilation...you choose to try the out.

IMO the kiter was a kook who had no business being out there. |
Awesome video, the part with the boats barely clearing it was great.
Also further demonstrated kiter kookyness in that he was on a twin tip!

Anyone who is on a twin tip in a wave like that definitely had no business being there. Lame.

Wow. The kiter was just late on his top turn and buries himself in the wave face and lets his kite drop. Looks like he took some lumps.
That thing is just multi-stories of sack-shrinking ocean falling on a flat reef.

Tamatoa is not a kook! He is a local and a very good kiter. Bettter than most who criticize him on this forum. By far! From the camera angle it seems the surfer should of seen the kite so im sure it was an accident because those guys are good friends. love the elitist attitudes on here. Get a clue and stop judging.

I didn't write the article on Surf Line... 99% of the people are going to interpret it the same way we all did.
Saying he is good friends with everyone doesn't really change that.

I don't think anyone has any more right to be on the ocean than anyone else. Surfers run into each other, others boards, people paddling out, dead pelicans, whatever.
Pure paddlers hate jetskis, windskippers v. stringmonkeys, surf kayaks in the lineup, SUP's at Rincon?
WTF? ITS THE OCEAN, EVERYONE'S PLAYGROUND. YOU PUNCH YOUR TICKET FOR THE E-RIDE YOU TAKE the risk that goes with it and have some fun.
I think its awesome those guys were out there kiting, bummer his kite got away, bummer a guy gets smacked with it, but hey, everyone walked, or swam away, and if that guy after getting body slammed by a rogue kite riding away on the jet ski rubbing his face checking for blood didn't have a smile on his face at that particular time, I bet he did moments earlier, and for the rest of the day as well.( Good one to ride away from, that looked nasty)
But I don't think its right to critisize someone for their choices or passions.
Did this make kiters look bad to surfers? GOOD!!! way to many feckin surfers anyway and I don't want even 1% of em taking up kiting cause I'll never get a parking spot at any kite beach ever again.
So good on ya kiting Chopes on a big day. Big Chopes=Big nads.

well, either way you do not have the right to put anyone in danger. Imagine what Hawaii would be if jetskis were not restricted in all waves? There would be accidents everyday. This is not about the right to be in the ocean..it is the guys right to not be put in danger by others.
Recently there were an article where Laird Hamilton talks about hows that wave has developed into a clusterf#$k
I think most of the boats have no business being where they are..it is a recipe for disaster because people that have been on the wave will eventually come screaming in where the boats are located. It is a zoo.
The kiter is pro and sure he might be a great kiter, but that was a kook move. Maybe he was on a TT because the wave is so far out there and kiting out is actually a loong ride. Doesn't matter...it is shitty to be on a TT on that wave.
I must say tho, that part of being good at something is also evaluating when to not go.

There are feckin jet skis in the lineup! Tourist boats all over the place, sharks in the water. And if anyone is putting anyone in danger its every mother's son that ventures out...
for there be monsters out there.
And how are you gonna compare your little overregulated nanny island to the third world, (read real world) don't hold water.
You sayin Laird never towed in there, or promoted it, videoed it, virtually put it on the map? And now he's whining about how crowded it is?
I gotta get my dictionary and look up the definition of irony, and I'll brush up on the meaning of tautology as well.

If he is such a good kiter, what was he doing riding a 15' wave on a twin tip?

Enough to know that a twin tip is not the right tool for the job. Kiting in the surf = directional, period. Twin tip in the surf = kook.

Pete you have never seen West Hansen on his Brokite waveboards, he is one of the few to make people eat those words.
