what if you carry a leash with you and only use it when you are getting back to shore in situations like this? |

Ummm, what? you wither use a leash or you don't.
If you haven't had the pleasure of getting rolled in a decent size wave while connected to your kite, give it a try. After you have done that, imagine what your board leash would have done during that spin cycle. It would be great to have a board leash but I can't see how it would not get totally tangled in your lines. Getting wrapped by your kite lines enough, kite lines and board leash...Ugggh.
My suggestions if your kite is crumbled or down in the break.. get rid of the kite pronto and swim to your board. Besides ripping your kite to shreds, it will pull you quite violently under the water when it gets carried by a wave.

OH MY GOD KITEBOARDING IS SO SCARY........SHARKS AND THREATS OF DEATH ALL AROUND
STAY HOME AND WATCH DR.PHIL.....
NO FUCKING LEASHES ON A BOARD UNLES YOU ON THE COUCH AND UNHOOK FROM YOUR CHICKEN LOOP WHEN SWIMMING WITH KITES IF IT IS TOO LAME TO LAUNCH BE READY TO DROP BAR WITH WAVE TENSION.

i think barfly just meant the outer swells/crumbling swells helped pull his kite in, but ditched it as soon as he got into the real waves.

"Points are that the kite can be used as a rudder/anchor that pulls you to the breakzone and closer to the beach w/o having to swim"
The last time I did this, the surf ripped my kite to shreds. Problem is, with the drag of your body, the water has no place to go when pulling on the kite, and rips out a panel.
I won't ever do that again. If I can't get the kite relaunched in the surf, and it is pulling hard enough to pull me in to the shore, I'm pulling the QR. |

as usual I'm all backwards ,,
I swim upwind and try to clear my lines from my person
I almost never drop my kite especially if wrapped up in it
other lines could be in a much worse position that I can't see. (around foot!)
I use my hands to plane to the surface
If all else fails I drop my release and hope for the best
then again I almost never go out any farther
than the surf line. (no more long swims for me!)
I've never blown a panel by doing this (knocking on wood)
but with side -on wind and waves I'm coming in
pretty fast
It helps just not to go out in marginal winds
with biggish swell |

FU@K sH&T!
NOW I GUESS I HAVE TO WEIGH IN ON THIS!
KITEBOARDING IS DANGEROUS? AFTER ALMOST 13 YEARS KITEBOARDING i THINK IT IS SAFER TO WEAR A LEASH IN THE SURF... DEFINITELY BETTER THAN GETTING SEPARATED FROM ALL YOUR EQUIPMENT... WTF!... YOU ARE LUCKY IF THE LEASH WILL EVEN HOLD TOGETHER... ONE LESS THING TO WORRY ABOUT! |

I'm pretty sure Spike was just asking if carrying a leash was a good idea, not suggesting that it was. Hence, the question mark. Calling him an idiot for asking a question seems pretty harsh... I haven't surfed much at all, but they told me in Hawaii to always wear a board leash. Anyways, seems like Spike's question was a good one. I'm glad I learned that the experienced surf riders think it's a bad idea; that's one mistake I won't make now...
A lot of us on here don't know shit about riding waves, but would really like to learn. One of the things that makes this such a great forum is the wealth of knowledge available here for the asking... |

not cool to slam on spike like that. he's trying to educate himself.
i don't think a twin tip will offer enough flotation to make it worth the trouble of leashing yourself to it. it seems a directional board would have survival value in a long swim, but i'd probably just abandon my twin tip.
the best idea is not to go far outside when the wind looks fluky (stormy instead of NW summer thermal) _________________ If you feel sleepy you need to be driving faster. |

Gross avatar dude...
One important thing no one's mentioning is the ability to read the conditions and not allowing yourself to be caught outside in dying winds to begin with. Was it getting late? Was it overcast? Did you decide to take that "one last run"? Is the wind going to get lighter as you drift downwind? Was the weather forecast calling for decreasing winds? I'm amazed at the conditions people will go out in sometimes - often times I think its because somebody who's made a long drive to the coast figures they have to go out and not get skunked. But don't let that lure you into getting into trouble. Swims aren't fun. Nor is the publicity of a Coast Guard rescue... |

When coming up in the foam, blow out first.
Twin tips have no value when it comes to flotation.
Tom Morey Surfboards, soft foam, I have no problem with a leash. It can hog tie you though, I will agree with that, but I want my board with me in the ocean.
It is not as easy as you say to get back to your board, especially in fair size surf.
Kiting is one of the few sports where a wrong decision could cost you your life. |

Lots of good input and opinions... going out and trying new things means you are going to crash your kite. Opportunities to learn are great. Personally, I don't mind a swim and I'll go out in just about any condition that can get me on a plane. I'll pay for it too sometimes |
