I just started kiting last fall, haven't really found any great spots here yet. I am going to check out lake Simtustus and Billy Chinook this summer. I think they get wind pretty regular in the summer just dont know how clean the wind is. I hear Prineville Resevoir can have some decent days as well hit or miss

Hey, I'm from Madras. Home of the freak wind. Welcome to central OR.

I live about 10 mins from Lake Billy Chinook. I have yet to try kiting there. I spent a lot of time there as a kid watersking and I can tell you that the shoreline is pretty much canyon walls and rock piles. I have yet to explore the northwest shoreline near the Island but it's probably a water launch/land gig no mater where you go. I plan to do a little more exploring there this summer.

I have popped my 16m up at Haystack on a NW wind but it was a freaky wind day and I didn't get much of a session in. I did get sick from the cesspool water though. I've heard rumors of people kiting there but so far the conditions have not lined up for me.

Simtustus is in a tight little canyon. Not sure the stars would line up for that one.

I have no knowledge of Prinville Res although I know the Kite-line crew has pulled off a few sessions there.

I hear Wikiup is is the friendliest if you don't have any support. There are
sandy beaches around the south side. The wind usually picks up around 4pm. Planning on giving that a go this summer.

If you are into the skate thing the Redmond Fairgrounds can be fun. I was just there Sunday with the longboard and a 2.5m. I had the whole joint to myself and got a good hour in before the hands went numb. Good times. You can look them up online to see if there is an event going on. It's sketchy when there are a lot of people driving through your lot. There is a weather station right there at the airport you can access on Wunderground. http://www.wunderground.com/US/OR/Redmond.html

I usualy roadtrip Lincoln City when I have a free weekend. I have a good bro there keeping me updated on the conditions. The kite crew in LC are a bunch of good hombres. I'd rather drive 4 hours and spend the weekend there then fight the dodgey winds here in Madras.

Up untill the end of this summer I was pretty much a hack kiter but now that I am more proficient I plan to do a lot more exploring around here. Let me know if you want to hook up and test out an area.

Cool, will do.

I'm just kind of figuring out the ground kite thing myself. I've been dinking around with my landboard and just recently brought the longboard to the party. It's a lot of fun but the slams hurt worse. Kneepads are a good thing.

Sick avatar Sid. I did KGB for about a year on the coast back in the day and decided I liked the idea of crashing in water a little better...taking it to the land is core for sure.

You guys should try to road trip it to Seaside sometime and ride with Eli and Gabe if he's still around. KGB in the AM when it's light and then hit a downwinder in the PM if it picks up

The fairgrounds is a good place to skate or use a mountain board if you are in the grass, sometimes when the parking lot is full the grass gives you more room. You can use a foil or an inflatable, just depends on the size and wind of course.
You have to watch out for that weather sensor from the airport though because it only updates once an hour and seems to register the gusts so often times the sustained wind is much lighter than what is reported.

Thanks Nate. It was 107 degrees the day that photo was taken. My friend had to roll out of the way after snapping that shot so I didn't land on his head. I've seen Gabe Kite. The boy has skills. I still suck with the kite/MB combo. I had the board a couple years before I got into the kite thing. It is a wild beast to bomb down hills with. I dig it with the kite a lot better. I got tired of being pitched in the weeds with my feet still attached. I think Kiteboarding saved that landboard industry.

Ansahra - I have been using my inflatables 2.5-10m. The longboard is so fast I think you could kite with a handkerchief and have fun. I am thinking about picking up a foil this summer. Maybe a small Bularoo. Knee pads are a must. I have not been using them with the longboard but it wouldn't be a bad idea if your not a proficient skater. I've been drug across the pavement so fast that I could smell my kneepads melting. I also use some elbow/forearm gaurds.

That's a good bit of info from Ike. I race my car at the Autocross events there at the fairgrounds once a month and the winds always seem to pick up enough for something around 2-3:00pm in the summer.

I got a great session in at Lincoln City today. Clear blue, 5' swell and a steady 15-25mph. We did a short down winder and then hung out at Canyons for a couple hours. Lost my board twice. Both times it got sucked out to no-mans land. She came back to me though. Got another rip in the old 12m Waroo but it was worth it. It's supposed to shape up tomorrow as well. To bad I have to go home first thing in the morn. Everyone else should ditch work and go.

Got a little at Haystack today, wind had a little too much south in it but it worked.
Started out on a 13 then wind picked up so I came in for my 10, was sweet for about 20 minutes until the wind lulled for about 10minutes with my kite coming down on the east end. Not good, after picking up about 70 lbs of weeds on my lines things went south from there.
