How much are the SUP to rent? |
If you're in Portland, Bob definitely is the one to go to for surfboards. His inventory is insane! I think that if you check the GP website, rentals are $25/day.
But, if you're over here in Hood River, come check us out. We'll have a fleet of SurfTech and Oxbow demo/rental Stand Up Paddle boards to try out starting in late April. Rates are $25/day (same as GP). Package prices start at $995 (board and paddle).

If you drop in on my 3 foot beach break mush I am going to beat you with my paddle!
Seriously though, surfers are funny. Go to Maui and check out Kanaha scene there. Its laid back, longboarders on the outside, SUP guys catching tons of waves off the shoulder and on the inside.
Everyone gets along and wears smiles. Maybe because its 80 degrees and beautiful clear water. Seriously some oregon surfers need to chill.
We stayed out of the lineup and out of the way, its just common sense.
Anyway check out SUP, its pretty neat. Been around awhile ya know. |

Carol and I tried out SUP for the first time last weekend in Maui. No wind on Saturday so it was fun to get out and surf. Caught a wave on my first try! Yeah, it's not so stylish as long boarding but you can turn it some if you get back on the tail. Also took it out with my 12m in 10 mph of wind. Felt like I was kiting an aircraft carrier! Actually wasn't too bad once the board got moving, went upwind pretty well. Kind of fun to do downloop jibes on it with both feet on the tail end of the board and 10' of board standing up out of the water at a 45 degree angle. (lead with the kite though!)

I seriously don't understand it, besides the fact that it's a great photography platform... |
actually the board is super versatile. You can do downwinders riding ocean swell, you can access breaks that are not easy to reach, you can go from break to break, you can catch waves fairly easy...still advise people to go longboarding first. DO NOT take one of these out in a populated break if you don;t knwo what you are doing.
You have ahigh vantage point so you can actually give other surfers hints on where the swell coming in.
I took mine out on the North Shore of Oahu last weekend. The waves were maybe 5-10 foot faces most around headhigh...in any case, I stood out on the shoulder paddeld a little back and forth between breaks, a lot of guys appreciated me giving them hints about where the next set would break...and then after those guy had caught theirs, I could catch the tail of it. I probably got at leadt a many waves as any one else since SUP is so much faster to paddle. Everybody was nice and had fun.
One thing I saw a guy suggesting dropping in on someone on an SUP....dropping in on someone that has a board twice as big as you, three times as heavy and they are carrying an carbon paddle might not be the greatest idea I've ever heard. Oh and not to sound like an ass...saying that someone does SUP simply because they cannot make the drop is lacking some knowledge to say the least:

Forgive my negativity, (and Jimi's) but there's some around here that have been pretty annoying in the surf lineup, and have lacked what Phil suggested was the key ingredient: common sense. |

yeah and sorry for being so stuck on this sport...it is very addictive. I have not had any of my long og short boards out in a long time simply because I am having so much fun on an SUP.
My point is more that it is individual whether or not a person is an ass. I have had plenty of other surfers be dicks about minor things...when I am surfing, and I don;t really think it what board they ride is the cause of their behavior
Try talking to them..let them know whats up. Send them to this: FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING SUP READ THIS:

On e thing I do agree on is that since the boards are so big they can cause a lot of damage to the user and others so it is critical that the rider does not behave like an ass...
..and yes wave hogs are more visible on an SUP since they can paddle back out faster and more easily...

We were on Jimmy Lewis rentals and they were awesome. Price on them was around $1400. Our boards were
definately better than other people in the line up and it made a hugh difference on being able to ride them and catching waves. If your going to spend the $$ you don't want a slow tank. So what are the best ones to get?
The view standing on them was awesome. The whales were going crazy jumping so I paddled out forever and hung out watching them. T came way upwind and got me and drug me in with his kite just before the wind died. It sure beat sitting on the beach with binoculars like everyone else.
Not sure how they would do on the Columbia. A downstream race might be funny. Last edited by carolb on Thu Mar 06, 08 2:08 pm; edited 1 time in total |

The Naish Boards worked really good. Went from roadkill to catching (and occasionally) surfing overhead waves in 4 days.
Also got a chance to paddle out to see the whales, the break was about 1/2 mile out and you could see the whales spouting about another 1/2 mile out. It was calm on the outside, so headed out, got about 50yrds from the pod, didn't want to get too close to disturb them, when a second pod rolled through right next to me - it was kind of mind bending - the whales dorsal rolled by and its tail came by what seemed liked minutes later - must have been 600ft long |

wo sounds really really nice. I seen whales when paddeling, but never that close. I've seen groups of dolphins come prety close, and an 8 feet endangered Hawaiian monk seal that almost came up on my board. Of course turtles you see all over...
Looking at the pics, it actually looks pretty nice, except it was maybe closing out on you guys a little?

The Laird 12ft is a superb board if you are just starting out. It is wider, thicker and has more float than the Jimmy Lewis boards. Definitely get a pad if you buy a SUP. Waxing that big mo-fo truly sucks and it's easier on the knees when you are starting out. (man, that sentence sounded dirty.) |

I use wax, I think it is fine. I guess you would prtect your board a little better with a pad, but I don;t fell wax is problem..and I can buy about 400 sticks of wax for the cost of the pad.
Had a go in Kailua today..no waves, no wind..actually nothing of anything but crystal clear waters..could see over 50 feet down..into bright green and crystal clear waters with reef, turtles and fish. An amazing experience. I was out paddling for about 4 hours..such a good work out and such a nice experience.
In any case, I am going attach some small hooks on the board I can bring out a cooler next time...and maybe some snorkel gear. Should be good.
