I was curious if you could do this on any old longboard (9' or so for my size? 5'6"/145lbs), or is the stand up board customized to be a lot wider and more stable? |

You could give it a try but the SUPs are much wider than your typical longboard = much less tippy. even the difference between the Naish 11.5 and 10.5 SUP was significant.
Did see some guys on 8' SUPs but they had mad skils. |

It'd be easy to test... just see if you can stand up on your long board, then add a paddle.
Like Gman said the massive 11'6" had way less wobble than the 10'6" ... The 10'6" was just a chore to stand up on at first, but after a couple of sessions it felt like the first day on the 11'6" ... practice makes perfect.
The guys on smaller SUP were awesome to watch, they looked just like long boarders with paddles. But like Gman says even those boards were much wider than typical long boards.
I think width and volume of the board is the main thing. They are almost closer to boats than longboards. |

We had fun on the Naish boards, the handle is a great feature that you don't see on many (any?) other SUPs:

(watch the movie on the page, you will get an idea of just how ginormous these things are) |

the starboard brand sup Has a handle also. It really is a great feature. Big winds seems to be making a big push for these things in their catalog but where in the gorge would u ever use them? It makes sense out at the coast for mellow waves and no wind IMHO. |

I can almost guarantee you NO. If it is a nice riding longboard, it will not be a good SUP.
At 145lb you will need to be extremly good to use a 9 foot board for SUP..actually I'd venture to say it is almost impossible. Although SUP boards are coming down in size, they have not only usually more width, but also a lot more volume.
If you are just starting out I would go the beginner board route. I also usually say go ride a regular longboard first...for many reasons
.....but SUP for SUP LB for LB... |

what is the thrill in stand-up-paddle-boarding??
I seriously don't understand it, besides the fact that it's a great photography platform... |

Their suppossed to be great exercise. Take up lots of extra space you don't have at home and on your car. But I'm still getting one anyway.
If just learning, think about the Tom Morey SUP, there soft top so when you fall on it you don't end up bloody. I have a 5'6" Tom Morey Fish that I put straps on and have no worry wearing a leash with it, plus they are nearly indestructable. |

Go try it. It's fun when its not windy enough to kite and it's great exercise. |

Its surfing dude! Once you are on the wave its a lot like longboarding. The really good SUP guys make it look identical to longboarding, except of course they have a paddle.
The advantage to longboarding is that its much easier to cruise around and catch waves. Also visibility is much better since you are standing up.
SUP in the Gorge - According to BamBam there are a bunch of guys in Maui who do downwinders on wind swell... seems like you could do the same here. I have seen swell in the Gorge that's easily twice the size as most of the waves we were catching in Maui. Yeah I know wind swell ain't waves but I think it'd be possible.
You'd definitely have to do it as a downwinder though, once you are standing on one of those boards in strong wind its really hard to paddle upwind. |

Well, you don't have to worry about sharks, & as mentioned you can catch the waves instead of waiting (to get eaten by sharks). |

Just stay out of the surfing lineups with those things, unless you want to make real surfers mad. Apart from the Hawaii guys who've been ripping with style for years on the SUP boards, IMO they're about as low on the totem pole as kayakers in the lineup. Looks like they'd be fun at some remote beach break on a small day, or doing paddle downwinders, or just goofing around - but my advice is to stay away from the surf spots when there's guys out. Just like kiters should do. |

Its a core work out and a nice way to tour around. Willamette park and around the island will do you in. Come try a rental SUP. It all about being out on the water when ever you can. |
