Last week I broke three vertabrae in my back ( T11-L1 )which were fused together with a titanimum rod. Im expected to make full recovery but Doc being a normal human being i wonder if his idea of full recovery is different than mine.
Anyone out there experience or know of someone to have this and kite again?
Thanks

Surfing a really powerfull wave on our coast that ive surfed my whole life .Got knocked out underwater then pummmled and rag dolled onto huge rocks. Fun! If hikers hadnt come by to find me might have been gonner. Still had to be life flighted to OHSU.. on top of back broke two ribs, collasped lung, ruptured ear drum, broken scapula and concussion.

Man, that's terrible.
The good news is your doc is saying full recovery. if you're unsure about kiting, talk to your doc about it. Remember though, if he's not a sports guy he's more likely to just say that kiting is out, even if you really could. If he's negative about kiting, get a second opinion from a doc who is a sports guy. Regardless, follow his directions for recovery and do all of your PT.
When you're back out on the water, there are good options if you need to reduce the shock from riding. John Bellacera's boards made here in the Gorge are not only works of art, but they are miraculous in their ability to tame chop. Very smooth riding. The Mako is a good second choice as well. Both will ride tons smoother with less shock to your body than a Twin Tip. Obviously, Surfboards will be outstanding as well.

Scary shit.
Were you out in this recent 20 ft swell?
I'm no orthopedist, but I am a health professional: If they say you'll make a full recovery, I'd believe it. And with kiting being as easy as you want to make it, I think you'll be kiting by next year no problem.

Wow.......quite the list of breakage Fog. Bummer news and good to see you're able and focused on getting back at it.
Dakine Nitrous shorts might be a good start. I've had rib and back problems in the past, not comparable to your injuries, but once I switched to the Dakines my seasons now go pain free. I also have a Bella King board and echo Nak's "low impact" ride input. The one thing about a board of that type is you can light it up speed and boosting wise but it comes in for a big soft landing. (NSI thick pads help.) Super floaty and as a hybrid you can switch up the ride during your session to minimize muscle/back strain. They do ride different but it might be an alternative to get you back in the game. (??)
Hope you have a full and strong recovery!!

Ha, over-achiever. I'm assuming you were surfing by yourself and or your surfing buddy was on the wave of their lives.
If memory serves me correctly, I seem to recall that you have had a collapsed lung before from another incident. Was it the same lung and once a lung has been collapsed, is it easier for it to collapse again?
What I find funny and not surprised by it is, with your description of your injuries, you held to the surfers code and didn't disclose where exactly the encounter transpired.
Heal quickly!

Best Wishes to you on a speedy recovery.
I also had my T11-L1 fused, thirteen months ago after a paragliding accident. I would say I made good recovery overall, but do live with some daily discomfort.
My recommendation is to walk as much as you can, starting with shorter hikes then working up to 5-10 miles trail daily asap. Remember every step is a gift!
-edit: just read the overall description of your injuries! wow you are truly lucky to survive that beatdown...every breath is a gift!

Gosh that is a rough go.
Amazing what the body will recover from. Hang tough and get after it.
Glad you made it out of there. Pistol crew sending bone mending vibes.
