OK, go to a pharmacy and get your Whooping Cough vaccination. Seriously. It's at epidemic levels in Clark county, sure to spread in to Portland. Apparently, pretty easy to catch. I know, cause I did.  Hopefully I'll be back on the water by late June. Worst case scenario could be September. 
Seriously folks, 5 minutes at your local pharmacy and you're protected. Those of you with infants, Go out today or tomorrow and get it. Period. You don't want to give this to your infant, it can kill them. You won't even know you have it while you're passing it on. It starts like an extremely mild cold, barely anything at all. During that phase you may not even think you're sick it's so mild. But that's the phase that's extremely contagious.

I'll second this recommendation!
1. most of us who got the vaccine when we were young are no longer immune. Immunity wanes ~10 yrs. Get your booster.
2. We older individuals who are partially immune are actually carriers for pertussis. Those most at risk are infants/children who have not been vaccinated yet.

Great advice. At the very least, if you have access to your medical records, all need to check if you've had this vaccine recently. It is given anytime you have a tetanus shot. Mine was administered during a routine physical exam in 2009. This is not something anyone should hesitate getting:
tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap)
Pronunciation: TET a nus, dif THEER ee a, and ay SEL yoo ler per TUS iss
Brand: Adacel (Tdap), Boostrix (Tdap)

Well, you can trust that if you catch this crap you'll really, really wish you had got the vaccination! 
Trust me, it's no fun. I feel fine most of the time, then I'll get a coughing fit where I literally cough all the air out of my lungs. Can't even stand. This could potentially last for months. I don't dare ride, even if I feel fine, because if I got a coughing fit out on the water it could be really difficult to get back to shore without drowning. Plus, without a vaccination you become a potential carrier to infect others--others who could possibly die because of the infection. You won't even know you're sick enough to be contagious. It only gets bad weeks after you're contagious. This isn't a distant theoretical thing. Epidemic status right now in Vancouver.

Just wanted to say thanks to Nak for bringing this up... you convinced me and I got the shot this morning. Also, thank you to Wylieflylote for the info on the exact shot... they had a little sign showing all the shot types, and I remembered your description and thought "yep, that's the one!"

For real, 8 Vaccines or items having to do with Blood & Biologics have been recalled in 2012 alone. I think most of the really fucked up Vaccines we send off to other countries tho. lol we are so lame. most look like things other than medicine tho...
