Where is the best spot to kite on the Or. coast in a south wind? I've heard the ponds at Fort Stevens, and Chinook Landing?? in Washington are good, but are they good in a south wind? PLEASE...I need to kite on Sunday and need to know where to go!

Sounds to me like your more interested in kiting the Columbia near the mouth ie ponds or Chinook. South winds are typically erratic and have way more variances then the summer N, NW winds. There are rare occations when the south winds are steady, but that happens (in my experiences) when rain storms come durning the summer months.

If you want to kite in the ocean with south, sw wind, then go anywhere there is wind and it is safe.

One place I would avoid is any jetty area on the windward side. South jetty with south winds. . . Catchers mitt for debris, wind probably is more turbulent and there inevitably will be a wicked rip current (with Sunday's forecasted weather).

South wind, go to the North Jetty side.

Never kited the ponds with s or sw winds because I'm out in the ocean; typically some wind with some east in it works best.

Extended forecast for Sunday is looking south and pretty strong:

Where's a decent launch area in chinook? can you post some lat and long from google maps? I'm definitely interested in that location.

My brother and I kited the ponds saturday on a strong SSW and it was killer!!
With a 30ft swell we were forced to flat water which worked out good.
Great sandbar for self launching, clean flat water behind the island for unhooked tricks, and riding along the rock jetty south of the launch makes for a sweet speed course. We were on our 6m kites and had a blast for 3 hours. See the "Spots" section above for directions to the Ponds. I hope to do it again this saturday!

You can kite the Ponds in a S wind. Go to the south side of parking lot D, walk out on the trail past the wildlife viewing bunker. The north side of lot D has a nicer beach but S wind will be off shore there and therefore a bit hairy. If you get in trouble you'll be headed out to the mouth and into shipping channel. Not good.

Its likely the S wind will be pretty gusty. So if the Sunday forecast is right, you'll need a 7 meter or smaller. I was out on my 10m last Sunday and was way overpowered because the wind came up stronger as I was rigging.

I'm guessing from what I've heard and seen so far, the ponds works best on fall easterlies. But its definitely doable on other directions.

Come on dude, do I have to wipe your ass after you take a duce, too? Razz Try the sites section on this page for some intel on sites to go on the coast. Or do a query search with the search function on this site. Take a map, look at a beach name and type it in. . .see what you can find? Consider where your coming from and how much you want to tavel and cross check it with your intel, forecast, map, etc and go explore. What is your goal? Do you want to do a downwinder, do you want to point sail, are you looking for choice waves to ride?

Consider this, the ocean will most likely be tubulant on Sunday due to the storm, so it probably will be mushy/low wave quality with lots of shore surge. Probably your best bet is to do sometype of downwinder, close into shore (good luck getting past the break). For that I would just go to the Northern Strip; downwinder from Del Ray to Sunset (5 miles approx).

Is this your first time out on the ocean? If so, I would consider going on a smaller day with better winds and with some people who know what is up.

Be safe and have fun.

Were you sailing with the tide flooding the area? With south wind and a flooding tide, this would increase your apparent wind speed.

same effect when riding the ebb tide in the ponds with east winds. Conversely, the flood tide with east winds decrease your power; kinda like RR conditions.

Speak with scott norby. He set us up last time and is on the forum when he is not surfing etc. i can tell you I went door to door to meet people and ask if we could have access to their beach etc as i was not sure if it was private etc. I wanted to drive and park so I could use my truck for refuge. I found that there was a wonderful elederly couple that lives just shy of the second beach access as you come into town from Astoria. they were kind and gracious to give us access any time we want to their sand parking lot which they own the property adjascent. We assured them we would not leave trash etc around. Scott Norby is better with the tides but our short time found it better to have a higher tide to allow a bigger riding area etc. Hopefully it helps, Blake

kiting the coast on a south wind is really quite simple
Step 1: Find windy spot
Step 2: Kite
