This is an interesting video of Robby. His first jump almost looks like he is on a kite drifting with the wind, not to mention the height. Robby is a great kiteboarder, I wonder if that made him a better flyer, soaring with his windsurfer?

The other thing is he is really cruising with his race board over those waves,
I wounder if that is possible with a smaller kiteboard?

I've been strictly kiteboarding the last 3 years, trying to focus on getting that
down as best as I can, but I'll have to go out and windsurf sometime again
on a big day and see if it helps my big jumps. But then again kiting is so much
fun Wink

Robby Naish is an extreme freak and can go just about anything on a board if he puts his mind into it. Just because he can do it doesn't mean us mortals can do it.

Kiting really helps the windsurfing, that's what I found. It is easy to do lots of cool moves, it opens you up to what is possible and gives you confidence to try the moves with a windsurfer. But, coming down from any major air on a windsurf is always a hard landing compared to kiting. After getting air off the back of a wave and landing 5 ft down in front of the wave on a windsurf, an easy move on my kite, I almost broke my ankles and that was it for windsurfing, no more heavy gravity, I'd rather be on a kite.

Yeah there's nothing like flying over the back of those outside swells,
sometimes you even scare up flying fish and they end up flying along beside you a bit. Nothing like lookin em in the eye, takes me back.
Robby worked on long jumps at one point, said in an interview once he could glide a few feet above the water a really long way powered up on the right point of sail, getting lift off the bottom of the board (I could too, but only for like 10 feet instead of 100 - Laughing ). Naish still inspires.
Like kiting, sometimes overpowered windsurfing the jump is the only moment you can relax for a second, just hang, powered you can milk it for what feels like an extra second....

Sorry to burst the bubble, but Robbie was doing this stuff long before kiting arrived on the scene. Maybe some of you fellow geezers remember "i-Max Extreme". Other guys like Dale Cook go just as big, and he doesn't kite. Windsurfing not a board sport? Don't know about that, not into the marketing lingo speak myself. Can't imagine kiting experience hurts, but getting really big air on a windsurfer is a huge commitment by comparison.

You do realize that Robby had been winning world championships long before kitboarding was even an idea, this video is from that time era. so no his kiting did not make him a better jumper windsurfing

Ya, I know, I remember Robby going pro when windsurfing went pro. It was amazing to see this kid beat all these older more experienced windsurfers. He's been my hero ever since.

I know he could always get massive air just like Dale but was wondering if the Kiteboarding aided him in floating longer in the air? I think that video was shot after Robby was kitting, he's been kitting since the late 90's.

No it's not, that video is way older than the late 90's

Correct - closer to the late 80's is more like it. I ripped it onto DVD from my VHS version a few years ago because the tape was getting worn out.

Naish, North, Slingshot, RRD - name one thing these companies have in common.
(Answer for you young-uns: they all have windsurfing roots).

Inept - you ever thrown a back loop on a windsurf board? Go ahead and try that on a 3.5 at the hatch and tell me if it takes more balls than hitting a slider in boots.

(No, seriously - having done neither I'd love to know! Wink)

What about windsurfing qualifies it as a board sport im just wondering?? Its as much of a board sport as Stand up Paddle boarding is. Windsurfing does not cross over into skateboarding, snowboarding, or wakeboarding, so how is it comparable? You are also riding a sail board, not a surf board.

"You are also riding a sail board, not a surf board" Inept

So in your world surfing is a board sport?? If surfing is one of your board sports than how in F@##$ are SUP's and sail boards not included. What do you think an SUP is or a sailboard for that matter??? I'm no historian but didn't windsurfing develope around the time of snowboarding and before wakeboarding and all originate from surfing????? In most peoples world they all would classify as board sports-- wouldn't they???
