ok now were talking, alot of good advice and some making me nervous and i don't generally get nervous with things like this. Please don't get me wrong if i in anyway insinuated that you were all stupid or incapable thats not what i was trying to do, just trying to get your attention. I have done alot of crazy things in my life and somehow managed to come through unscathed. And like most of you i'm sure, i need a little danger in my life to make me feel alive.

Just wan't to say thank's to NAK for the good advice also PJC I think your right about the 90% learning without lessons, and snow kiting and possibly trying a mountain or all terrain board , and KITEMARE with photo shop this would never work though, my friends know me better than that. Oh and Pdx theres nothing wrong with masturbating with a metal hook, i try different things all the time. If i forgot anyone and i'm sure i did thanks to you.

Instead of advice I'll tell you my experience and you can take what you wish. I tried kiting, sans lessons, in the days before certification. Two line Wipika and a 7'2" surfboard and a very quick beeline downwind (sans board, of course). I had grown up flying stunt kites which got me into windsurfing which begat years of lost jobs and broken relationships and a decade lost in that windy northwest mecca, but that's another story. Anyway I figured it must be the board so I tried it again on a Lester Polyester creation (with straps) and fared even worse, so I went back to poledancing until safety actually became a consideration in kite design (~2006, and that's sarcasm by the way... well kinda). My "instructor" (drinking buddy) couldn't teach me anymore because of what he did to his back kiting anyway.

Borrowed a stunt kite, got that down pat, watched the videos (VHS, not Betamax), read the mags, and dug through product descriptions to learn the gear and distinguishing features. Saved up the cash and went to South Padre Island, Texas, for lessons with Air Padre (boats, radio helmets, top notch instructors). Flew a 17m LF my first day, tried waterstarting, almost got it. Flew a 9m LF second day, got up riding in one direction, considered paid lessons a success, then went on to practice self-rescues.

Yes, instead of practicing riding, I spent a bunch of valuable time practicing safety, because the money I spent on lessons bought me the time to. All told, by the end of my one week there I was doing transitions in both directions and practicing "sending" the kite to jump. Came back with a cracked rib and a new addiction.

People can talk safety until they're blue in the face but a newbie either gets it or doesn't listen. From my perspective (I'm cheap) it was money well spent, because I learned way faster than teaching myself and I lived through several kitemares (you will have them) with instinctual calm. Plus beer is cheap in Texas.

To be fair, being around the sport and industry gave me an advantage many don't have, but I suppose that's why you're on forums like this to start with. Welcome and good luck!

Really? Becuase I recommend wearing a helmet no matter what skill level,...things happen. Same goes for a life vest, when was the last time you had to swim thru big nasty swell? and go-joes serve a resonable purpose and are much better than a leash, so let them be. Wink

GoJos kick ass - just wait until the beginning of the season and you will see post after post of lost boards. These boards would not have gotten lost if they had gojos on them.

Moto Mouth should be changed to gojo pimp. Bwahahaha!!

Life jacket is probably not neccessary but an impact vest is a pretty good idea. I've never hit my head on anything kiting but over the years several boards have hit my head...two because of leashes.
In 8 years of kiting I've never lost a board. If you want to gojoe then gojoe but it really is just a cruch for those that can't body drag. The leashes though I don't why they still make those things. I cringe and run the other way whenever I see a leash

Totally agree!! Board leashes in kiteboarding is asking for serious injury, or possibly drowning if you get knocked unconscious. Unless you are a proficient bodydragger you have no business working on your board skills in the water.

Wow, were to begin? I guess with Holly how did i forget Holly must have been that warm welcome. Ok so no helmet, life jacket or board leash. I don't even have the kite yet its in the mail, counting the minutes tick tock tick tock. I think you might be right about the trainer kite. although not usually my style, however like i said there are no shops to bye kites here or instructors. I spend a fare amount of time around the beaches here and never saw anyone kiteboarding. I guess i'll be the pioneer.

Yeah - you know it. I personally like to double the leash up. I would hate for my board to get away from me. You know those things are expensive. Rolling Eyes

Hitithard - I have to say, it sure sounds like you are pulling our chains. I shouldn't have gotten into this, but seriously, take a vacation and plan to take a lesson. You will get hooked and have the ground work to really start a great progression with or with out all the safety gear. We were all kooks at the beginning- and some of us still are. Good luck and have fun.

At least you dont have to worry about pissing off a local kite community by getting a beach closed down or bringing bad publicity to a local scene.
Sounds like in your situation you can only hurt yourself (unless you count the family you could leave behind) , the ones I really feel for are friends being taught by a friend.....that allways serves up some painfull entertainment.
