Maybe I am reading more into this than is there.
Can you launch off the up river side of the new launch area. It appears they only want kiters to launch in the river channel.
It is not a criticism of any kind. this is a very nice victory. I am just asking for clarification. |

Great work guys!
SalmonSlayer, I think you can launch on any part of the designated launch area (West, East, North). You can only pump and dry on the East side of the NO LAUNCH beach section. My guess is that was done as a compromise with other users on that beach. The writing on the East side of the launch area just says to be careful since there's no downwind exit. I don't think it says anything about not launching there.
I'm sure Forrest or someone else can correct me if I'm wrong. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

You're correct. The CGKA would prefer if kiters did not kite downwind of the Marina Sandbar. This was a compromise with the Hood River Yacht Club.
There is a scenario imagined where a downed kite, straight downwind of the kiter, drifts down into the path of sailboats exiting the marina and gets caught up in a sailboat impeller. The sailboat then has no power and drifts into the bridge causing lots of damage to the boat and bridge.
The Yacht club's representatives were very cooperative through this process and the CGKA wants to respect their concern and keep out of their way.
BTW, The specific kiters of concern here are friends teaching friends.
Hope this answers the question? |

Forrest,
Will we be able to roll our kites up on the grass at the Marina? There is a ton of real estate there.
Thank You for all your hard work on this! _________________ KB4C!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just use your best judgment and think about the Port making decisions next spring as to whether they're going to continue letting kiteboarders use this area.
I think it really depends on how busy it is down there. You can probably roll your kite up near your car most days but if it's busy, I'd avoid dragging an inflated kite through a crowd.
What you can't do is leave a pumped up kite sitting on the grass taking up room that should be there for the beach going public.

Thanks for your hard work guys and gals of the CGKA.

It is approved! You may kite from the Marina under the regulations listed above starting now.
Now all we need is wind and blue skies!!! _________________ Nick Stuart

Quite a few kites on the Marina beach yesterday. We realize with the high water that is nice to go over there and launch where you're not supposed too, but don't do it.
Worst of all was the 6 or 7 kites taking up all the grass space so no one could use the beach. People bring their families down there to hang out on nice days, and if you piss them off, we'll loose this beach.
By ignoring the agreement we have with the rest of the community of Hood River, not just the Port, you're saying I don't care and my session is more important. Don't be so selfish. This ideology will get us kicked off the Marina beach and set the CGKA's efforts back several years. Don't make us name names, because we know you should know better.
If you want to use the Marina beach during high water, rig down near the restroom as noted on the graphic posted in this thread. You then need to walk out in the water to launch. _________________ [b:13763ca0d3]The CGKA is your advocate for Kiteboarding in the Gorge! Just an update for those of you who are using the Marina kite launch and following the rules, please speak up and talk to those that may be breaking the rules.
After this weekend's incident of multiple kites being flown in and around families, kids and sunbathers, word trickled down to our shop via the local Port representatives and a city council member that complaints had either possibly been filed or called in regarding this behavior.
I was also personally notified as a reminder that these privileges are still currently on a probationary status, and as so could be yanked very quickly.
All of this and I didn't even step foot on a beach all weekend.
Please remember that this is a privilege and an opportunity for us to be able to SHARE the Marina Beach, not take it over.
Is it time to start taking pictures and posting rule breaking offenders on the kite forum?
I'm not into witch hunts, but I will tell you this, the CGKA worked long and hard to gain this FREE privilege and if we possibly lose this privilege due to a couple of people who were to cool to follow the rules, then witch hunt time it is. _________________ Pure Stoke Sports

Just to add to that. The Marina DOES NOT WORK when the river is HIGH. This location is only intended to be used when the beach is well exposed and you are able to launch by the rules and regulations that we have agreed on. PLEASE DO NOT MESS THIS UP for everyone else.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. _________________ Nick Stuart

Yeah the Port takes time to get signs and bouys up...
Please refer to the first page of this thread. Look at the diagram as to where to kite. Thanks and enjoy. _________________ Cleverly disguised as an adult...
