There's a free app for just about any smartphone called Trapster. What you do is you use it to report speed traps you pass while driving. It then warns anyone else, using Trapster, approaching that speed trap. It's pretty easy to use, and it's free.

http://www.trapster.com/

Anyways, we all go to the same spots, so if as a group we were using this everyone's odds of getting a ticket would go way the hell down. Idea So if you're interested sign up at the website. I started a trusted group called NwKite. After you sign up, PM me & I'll get you in the group.

To use Trapster you need a web and GPS enabled smartphone. WinMobile, Palm, Iphone, Blackberry or Android.

There's different kinds of alerts, Live Police, Fixed speed or red light camera, mobile speed camera van, favorite police hiding spots. I disabled the favorite police hiding spots because it was just going off all of the time. The rest seems pretty valuble though...

Any thoughts on this?

that's funny, I was thinking about posting all the favorite cop hang outs on I-84 between PDX and HR. So it vibrates or alerts when your getting close to one?

That is awesome!!

I am in. I will download this over the weekend. There aer really only like 5 or 6 spots on the I-84 corridor that cops hide in all the time. I feel pretty confident about driving that streatch, but not so much if I am going to the Coast.

I still reccomend a good old fashioned Escort radar/laser detector. I think they run about 3-4hundred, but one ticket and increased insurance more than makes up for it.

Absolutely. You don't know if you're the first one by that day! If enough of us use Trapster though, the odds of avoiding a ticket get a lot better.

PDX, once you get out of town the "Police like to hide here" alert is more useful. In town, it's constantly going off. The reports for live police are great in town though. It's already warned my of two live traps. Pretty cool. Very Happy

On the way to the coast the Live Cops feature wasn't so good. Not enough people using it, so no reports. That's why I started this thread.

Past Hood it always seems the Mosier on/off ramp is smokey central in either direction.

Further East heading towards Rufus be careful past Wishram before Biggs Junction. A lot of shrubs dividing the highway they like to "hide" in.

I cruise control at 72 and never seem to have a problem. If ya gotta speed Kodiak's radar detector suggestion seems legit.

Yeah I ussually set the cruise at 72 now as well. It seems like the sweet spot for me to not stress about cops, still make decent time, and still get about 35/6 MPG.

I used to cruise around 80 though so the radar detector made more of a difference.

Police spots going west from the Dalles to Portland:
Coming down the hill from the Rest stop before Mosier
Mosier Off-Ramp
Truck Weigh Station (Trevor's Hole)
Right after the speed steps down from 65 to 60 they like to hang in the middle of the interstate before town

I will make a mental note of the mile markers for spots going east on I-84. I know where they like to sit, but don't know off hand the exact locations.

You should be OK, most of the time. If the trooper pointing the Laser at you had a friendly chat with his captain that morning, about how maybe he wasn't as attentive as he should be lately (Meaning "write more tickets" ) 72 might get you a ticket.

The speed laws in this country have very little to do with traffic safety, and everything to do with revenue generation. That said, trapster is just a high tech version of flashing your lights at oncoming traffic after passing a speed trap.

An even better defense than a radar detector is a contribution to your choice of a policeman's benevolent association. The money goes to a truly worthy cause, and you get a little star to put in your window. Very Happy All police know what that star means... Wink

Dude, I got an even better solution. For 3 or 4 hundred bones - just buy yourself a 95 Geo Prizm (preferably purple) and then you won't ever have to worry about speeding tickets cus the car can barely go the speed limit anyways - you will even get passed up on the freeway by little old ladies. Thumb's Up

I tried a similar solution. My old school Toyota Landcruiser was the shit, trouble was it toppped out around 65. I just couldn't handle driving that slowly Smile

I fully agree. The POS Jetta I've had screams at 70mph, gets 40mpg and no tickets. Maybe we could pass the hat to put a spoiler on Moto's Prizm for his upcoming birthday. Hope it's a good one Martin!

I think I would settle for some XRS decals - that would be funny - a purple geo prizm with AWD and XRS decals on the back! That would make people laugh fer ser!

If you flash your lights that helps too warn on coming traffic. Just remember when the Cops aren't writing you a ticket their making sure your shit is safe.

As for my gramatical wordsmithing here goes nothin:

If you don't like cops you should ask yourself, "Why"?

Get back to me on the grammer dude
