Curious why is paragliding and base jumping prohibited - do brightly colored kites and shutes disturb the wilderness aesthetic (probably no more than tents - but they move around more)

- or was it more that the Park Rangers in Yosemite got tired of picking up the assorted body parts scattered across the meadow?

The "suits" freak out every time a new "extreme" sport starts making it into the mainstream. They just need to be educated on the sport.

If paragliders and base jumping have been prohibited based on a legal inclusion into the definition of aircraft, then they may have set the precedent for us. But, I doubt that it's been dragged through the courts - probably just a random decision made be a couple of districts. A kite is not an aircraft - you need no special license to operate it.

I would think that kites would be quiet efficient resque devices for the wilderness. Twisted Evil

My dad came to visit this weekend. He is a retired forest service employee, sometimes as law enforcement, all-be it logging law enforcement, and more importantly a rookie snowkiter out of Montana. After telling him about the situation down around Bend, he says that there is nothing the forest service can do yet. He says when the ranger shows up, you just need to tell them in a polite way to write you a citation, which will never fly as there have never been any real laws set into place. To have a law set into place, it would have to go thru the higher ups and the bureaucratic mess that any federal law would, which as we know could take years. We should however still stay on the offensive to keep kiting in a good and positive public eye, as down the road this could still be a real threat. Good luck down there, looks like sweet terrain worth defending for all of us.

This sounds like good info in my years of dealings with the F.S. each district has a pontiff and they have a lot of lattitude in thier districts.

It will for sure bring this to a head.
I would be shocked if the outcome would be in our favor.

who's first? Wink
