Can anyone really trump this shit? Imprezas are fun to rally, and the only "cool" Subbie... the rest are lezbo or mommy wagons (sorry Nic.)
Like Tekko was saying nothing beats studs or even really good winter tires ... I have a few pals who have winter tires and summer tires. If you really want confidence go for studs, but make sure you use them to drive in snow not just around PDX.
The subbie is fun NW car because its functional with the AWD and still gets good MPG. Nic and I have good all season tires and they work great on snow and ice and all summer long.
Tons of traction in the snow, I worry a bit about high centering but was able to navigate the 2 foot drift in front of my driveway no prob (just went over it hehe.)

Subaru lovers and lesbos: for your viewing pleasure
Made the last of our 2866 mile drive from Texas yesterday. Took 6 hours from
Corvallis to HR. Bailed off the I-5 in north Salem. Traffic was backing up there.
Lots of chains littering the highway, crazy truckers and too many knuckle head
drivers.
99E was badly rutted but much less traffic so it was an easy pace. Got onto the
205 for a short jaunt to exit 19 where we took 26/35 over the mountain. Nicely
maintained all the way. Stopped at the Huckleberry Inn for a burger before
dropping into HR. Got passed by some idiot in a blue Toyota who thought he
needed to haul ass down 35 after skiing all day with the family. Kids in the back.
What's up with the wanna-be rally drivers racing up and down 35? Slow the fuck
down ASS HOLE. We got a whole winter to enjoy and don't need it spoiled by
you and your race up and down the mountain power trip.
Other Daughter made the drive later (had lunch with her BF in Salem) and spun
on the 99 but got it together and kept going. She was a little late for the mountain
so did 84 after dark. She said there was some blowing snow but mostly dry
pavement. You got to teach those youngens how to drive in the weather.
Very proud of both my girls for their driving skills.
Kim was glad we all made it home safely.
My AWD Saturn Vue was great with my existing M+S tires but I went ahead and
ordered some Blizzaks for it. Plus I got a Buddha on the dash and rub his tummy
from time to time. The little dude can make the wind blow and the swell kick up
too.
Happy Holidays,
Hein
Good to hear you made it
We once took the the march home for the holidays and then back to SPI
I thought not so far fuuk
way too far
Christmas eve we made the same exit off I 5 hit 99 and was truckin along at 30
watchin all the low slung rigs dragging on the hard ice
pretty soon they would be done and the tow trucks on the way.
my new 285/85/16's with studs were eatin it up got em cheap too ,,,
less than$800
sweet coming home with the white shit gone

chains have their place
just as long as you don't go over 30mph and don't buy the 50.00 cheapies that break in 30 min
i put mine on last week just to try them out---- i'm pretty sure that i could have drove through just about anything as long as i didn't high center. this was the first time in the 8 yrs i've lived in hood river and welches that i've ever used them.
superior to any studded tire in a deep snow/ice covered road scenario
if any of you experts are interested
http://www.4x4abc.com/ML320/ml_chainss.html
if i had a $1000 setting around to drop on some studs, i still wouldn't do it
the roads in oregon are so f'ed up from half the population rollin studs for half the year.
i 84 and i5 both have like 3 inch ruts in the roadway(which are almost as dangerous as ice when they are filled with water in the spring) from people rockin the spikes.

The roads all accross the nation are being ruined
from trucks
and the publics unwillingness to fund the
railroads(always subsidized)
and I'm the last for subsidies.
the country is so far behind in transportation
we may never catch up
Iv'e put on a lot of chains over the years (Log trucks, skidders ,yarders, even track machines)working at above snow level all winter.
but never on a car or pick up.
Just didn't go if couldn't get there in 4 wd,
It's why I waited till X-mas eve to come to pdx and see my family
wasn't slick just rutted
But my road grader (snow machine/ weed eater)
always was chained up when the snow flies

Deficit spending in federal highway funds started in 2001, but politicians and the public's unwillingness to bear a higher gas tax is also a big part of the problem. Just had the 8 o'clock news on and it was like "gasp! $.02 a gallon increases!". During the last election there were at least three races where candidates accused incumbents of voting for gas tax increases - and it was the top-listed 'negative' on their campaign flyers. The reality is that if people were forced to pay the true costs of the highway system they would drive less, or maybe carpool more, or walk or bike or maybe think twice about chaining up to go to the mall in a blizzard. Granted, better management of existing funds and priorities would be an improvement, but funding retrofit and maintenance projects properly also employ people and are an impetus to the economy.
Oh, who am I kidding, it's somebody else's problem...
(your quote is dead on, though, sorry for the soapbox rant - politics gets my ire).

That semi-truck has been there forever! Wondering if anyone knows what is up? I might have to apply international salvage rights on it and make it a slider on the sandbar.
