4/4 days of kiting in Brazil. This place is truely a kiters paradise. Long sandy beaches, wind every day, warm water, nice waves and flat water spots. We have been doing downwinders each day on our way from Fortaleza to Jeri, and still have a couple more days to go. All you really have to do is look at the first picture below and then go buy a ticket Smile Unfortunately I don't have any photo software on this computer, so I will post a bunch of shots when I get home.

Need I say more? Cool

Janet is getting pretty good on her jumps.

Big smile after a great day.

Check this link:

http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/deals_offers/fare_sales/atlanta_flights/index.jsp

Buy your tickets by Nov 10, finish travel by Jan 31. $898 Round trip to Fortaleza from Atlanta. Should be able to get a cheap fare to Atlanta... That's only one plane change between PDX and Fortaleza! Very Happy

Jim & Janet, I am so jealous!!! Looks very cool! Are you staying in Fortaleza then? Let us know all the details; this I have to do!

PostTue Nov 04, 08 3:28 pm    Flight/Travel Time! Reply with quote

Hey there,

This is boarderchick:-) We actually booked the flights in February, and they were like so:

PDX to Houston; Houston to Miami; Miami to Fortaleza

We were to leave PDX at 11:50PM and arrive in Fortaleza the next day at 5:45am, so basically about 12 hours of flying time and then about travel time was approximately 21.5 hours.

Then, before leaving for Africa due to fuel prices they cancelled our Miami to Fortaleza flight, and we did the following:

PDX to Houston; Houston to Miami; Miami to Rio; Rio to Fortaleza

We left PDX at 11:50pm, and then sat in the Miami airport for 10 hours, and then had a 1.5 layover in Rio and then arrived in Fortaleza at 12:30pm (local time), which is 4 hours ahead of Oregon. So, all in all, we had 28+ hours of travel time. Yipee! At least it wasn't the 42 we had for Africa!

On the way back now, instead of our straight thru flight from Fortaleza to Miami, we are now stopping in two places in Brazil, then getting to Miami with a 21 hour layover and then Houston and PDX. Pain in the arse!

Our straight thru from Amsterdam to Kili and Dar Es Saleem to Amsterdam were also cancelled to due to gas prices, so basically, it was 42 hours of travel on the way home, and then getting to Africa it was approximately 36 hours!

Anyway, we've been told that Delta starting in November of this year will have a straight thru flight from Atlanta to Fortaleza.... That should be about 9 or so hours of flight time, but double check and then possibly about 5 hours to get to Atlanta (another guess).... But 13 hours of flight time beats what we had to do....

If NAK is correct with the ticket costs, then that is about the same price we paid for booking 9 months ahead of time for the Miami to Fortaleza and Fortaleza to Miami straight flight, and then about 500 or so for the Domestic from PDX to Miami! So, about 1350 per ticket, plus taxes, it was close to $3K.

There is a great deal of CHOP and HUGE Waves, no joke about that one... The lagoons/lakes are super CROWDED! The "flat" water, well, that is totally crowded as well... But, you have the brazilian bikinis around so hey, depends on what you are here for.... LOL!

With the huge waves, I had an OH SHIT jump today and Jim has had plenty of huge air here. We were totally lit on the 7 and 9 today, and supposedly once we get to Jeri we will be on the 5 & 7 everyday.... This is our first day with Internet, so we just wanted to post something and say "hello" to all... We will certainly give updates as we have connections:-)

Sorry so long, but wanted to answer questions! Hopefully, we will have more pictures, but with us both on the water for the downwinder it's a bit difficult:-) 25KM downwinders each day, man are we beat..... But it's been fun for sure! Definitely representing Slingy have a great sunset picture of the kites on the beach I think. Hopefully, the days will get even better. Off to watch the election!

Thanks for the interest in the post!

Can't wait to hear more you guys!

The Delta Flight I posted starts in mid December. It actually makes a brief stop in Recife before continuing on to Fortaleza. (about a 1 hour flight.) It should make getting there from here a lot easier... If anyone is thinking of doing this, I'd book tickets on the special price if you can. I have no idea how much it will be once the sale ends. probably a lot more.

I just ran a few dates during the sale on Delta's website. Found some roundtrip fares from PDX to Fortaleza for $1140, including taxes. That's only one plane change, in Atlanta.

Hey thanks for the info Kak and boarderchick
The flight into Recife/Fortaleza must be new.
I have alway had to travel into Rio or Sao Paulo before going on to the North East.
I know the 28+ hr trip, not fun!
I will definately check out that new flight.
Can't wait to see more photos.
I love Brasil !!!

Well we are now into day 7. It just keeps getting better. We finally got into Jeri last night. Had the absolute best downwinder from Prea down to Jeri last night. Powered/lit 7m/9m. Really nice head high waves and beautiful ramps for jumping. Every day we have ben here has been windy, so we are taking a day off to recuperate today.

We spent a couple of days at Les's place (the gorge animal). He has a really nice setup with waves and flat water. When the low tide comes in the reef creates butter flat water. We also stopped at a lake for a while yesterday just inland from the ocean and had a really nice flat water session.

It doesn't really seem to be a question of if there is going to be wind, just how windy. We have been out on everything from the 7m to the 13m (sunset session). It gets windier the closer you get to jeri, so I imagine it will be just 9m-5m now. The water is super warm, probably mid 80s, and the air is always warm. If you come down, don't waste the weight on taking any wetsuits or heavy clothes.

Anyway, more pictures when I get back, internet is just to slow for pictures.

Here are a few more pictures from the last couple of days. We did go out for a while today. Again these are all undedited and uncropped since I don't have any photo software. Janet is getting pretty good with her jumps.

The place we are staying in Jeri is really nice, vilabelavista (www.vilabelavista.com). It is run by a women from Stevenson and her husband from Brazil. They have a Donkey that can take you to town or kiting, a10 minute trip, or you can just walk in either way it is pretty much 10 minutes. Jeri has turned into quite a tourist town, so staying outside is nice since it is quite a bit quieter.
