I will be coming down to smith rock to do some climbing, are there any good landkiting locations on the way between Portland and smith rock ? Having a beach with free camping nearby would be an added bonus!
I will be riding my mountainboard with a 6m or 10m Ozone Frenzy, hope to see some local riders. |

Most of the North Coast ocean beaches offer great hard sand riding when the tide is mid to low.
I don't know of any inland kite-land boarding other than trying to poach a soccer field here or there.
Good luck!

Smith rock itself sux for kiting. I climb too and I used to bring power kites to Smith for camp entertainment. There's just too much rotor near the rocks for large kites to be safe and fun.
Get to the coast! Manzanita is usually super windy, but you can't beat the beaches north of seaside at low tide. You can drive on those beaches for about 10 miles. The further north you go, the windier it gets (usually). There are several approaches to get your car on to the beach, but I'd recommend 4WD this time of year. Most of the approaches currently have a lot of deep loose sand due to no rain and lots of wind. Once you are on the hard pack there's no issue though.
The pics found here are from the north coast. Hope they inspire you to get out there.

| any open spaces out that way are going to have lots of sagebrush, not exactly the best land board terrain... |
