Sun May 11, 2008 12:54 pm How do you pronounce Sauvie Island? |
|
|
I've heard Sauvie's island pronounce two different ways. Phoenetically:
#1. So-Vee's Island
#2. Saw-Vee's Island
Anyone know the correct pronounciation - and anyone know the origin of the name?

JP and I have always said #1 (back from like 2000), but just about everyone else says #2. Pretty sure #2 is correct, but I don't think I can change now...

| I would say #2 like a deuce. I know an old school WS. He said back in the day it was called rocket beach. They all took their rocket boards out for a ride.

| I think the correct way (from someone that lives there told me) is #2 although technically both are wrong because its Sauvie island not Sauvie's island.

More on SI than you wanted to know...

Of course no discussion of SI is complete without this graphic (note the building full of sewage producers--and get ready to take a hit off the "outfall" beer-bong!):

It's "safe" to venture into the water 3 days after any significant rainfall. Notice how the Summer illustration shows no overflow?
Actually, any water near humans is pretty well contaminated , with or without the overflow problem. That's why watersport enthusiasts usually have very strong immune systems. True kiteboarders bodies fight off bad organisms all Summer long. I'm starting to brew up some Kombucha tea to help me fortify my immunity.
All this to say, all of our kiteboarding locations are pretty nasty. That's just part of our sport. The only bodies that can't handle the cesspool reality of our sport, are those with immune deficiencies .
I still can't stop kiteboarding. When I'm not in the water, I find myself in constant yearning for that forceful tug of the harness, and the excitement of being yanked into the sky and brief flying sensation. Nothing even comes close. Sex is good, but kiteboarding's better, and when the winds are a-blowin', Sawvee Eyelan can't be beat (except for all other places when the winds are a-blowin' )

Let's start up that as a new thread. Whoah, I've slept in a doghouse many nights after expressing that. Years and years ago, when we had the same email address (1993?) I accidentally left a note on our PC about how I'd prefer a sunny Gorge 5M w'surf session to sex. Still haven't heard the last of that one.
