| What's with this negative attitude people??? Driving 1:20 to Sauvie's to get skunked vs. 2:40 to get good strong wind. I agree it is pretty far, but once a week when Sauvie's looks shitty it seems worth it. I got my gear in the car, but we'll see what happens with these clouds. Hope for some frontal winds.

I have always dug Jones. With all of the slow twisting and turning driving to get to Sauvies, Jones only ends being an extra 20 or 30 mins. for me. I find that worth it for a guarantee. That said, Stevie is probably closer than Jones. Things that would make you consider Jones over say the near gorge site would be that there is a ton of beach, the wind is consistent/strong/not as gusty as HR, no such thing as too crowded with kiters. Disadvantages are that it is just as far as Gorge sites, rednecks and toothless meth heads on quads and dirtbikes(though they really don't mess w/ you and sometimes do dumb, but entertaining shit, like jump their dodge neon off of a sand dune), and there really isn't a decent place I know of to grab a beer until you are back in portland.
Nick, Casey, Doug, Leon, and Danny are all local and way cool.

You forgot to mention that the meth heads come right to your car for delivery. . .most of them are riding ATVs quads
Bottom line Jones is quite a drive, but definitely stronger winds than Sauvies albeit more gusty. And watch for those wind shadowing ocean going ship--shipping channel is right off the beach/launch area.

| forgot about the windshadowing ships. Have seen those twice make somebody have a really bad day. Especially those big ugly car freighters.

Jeri, is that you?
I usually head West to Cornelius Pass (exit 62 I think) and take that over to highway 30. Then go RIGHT (EAST towards Portland) on 30 for about 1.5 miles to the Sauvie Island bridge.
We can carpool if you want. I'm gonna keep an eye on the conditions and then make the call.

i dont know jones or sauvies at all so i dont know what to watch for. i usually just go to stevies. i'll watch for your call and follow suit.

Dude, I'm not being negative, just a little more conservative. I get off work at 4:00 and it only takes me 35 minutes to get to sauvie from my office in the couv, and more importantly, when I'm done kiting and I'm exhausted, I'm only 30 minutes from beer and wings. Maybe I don't want to start kiting at 6:00. Besides, its not like Jones is off the hook nukin when sauvie is dead. If Jones is blowing then sauvie typically blows. They both shut off at around the same time..
If your taking the twisty and slow road to sauvies your taking the wrong road. Double back under the bridge when you reach the island..don't go straight.

No problem man. I totally understand.
However, I do feel like Jones is off da hook a lot when Sauvie's is really light. The far side of the river often blows 20-35mph in the summer when Sauvie's is doing its usual thing and is pretty marginal. It's also a lot steadier on that side. For me that might be worth the trip about once a week.
It's all good as long as you're getting out and kiting and drinking beer. Both spots have their advantages.

| Yeah, I hate those towns being right on the highway. They're the reason the drive takes so long and they're perfect spots for speed traps. They need I-84 to continue West instead of 30.

You can go up 5 and cross at Longview to avoid those towns - Can be faster or slower from my experience tho. Also, wouldn't a stong influence from the West affect Sauvies more - ie. make it flukie. I've had good days at Jones when Sauvies didn't go or went light & late . I'm leaving for JONES NOW - see you guys out there. - Chris

| Damn, you're an animal leaving so early. On a typical day it usually ramps up around 2-3pm, but who knows what'll happen today. Hope it's good and might see ya out there, but later. I've got some beer in the car, but no cooler. I'm sure the river water can cool it off for us though.

PMB -
From the Couve I'd take I-5 up to Longview and then go over to get to Jones. On the way you could check Kalama which sometimes gets more wind than Sauvies.
