The recent slider thread is pretty timely as I have been thinking about the possibility of making a slider for Sauvie (even though I have only hit a slider a grand total of once) (mostly b/c the sand bar slider is right in front of the peanut gallery and I fear open mucking will occur).

I can get steel stock at wholesale prices and have access to a welder put wanted to know what other people thought of the idea. Obviously, I would think that the slider would have to be taken apart at the end of the day and hidden in the sand or somewhere else b/c I am fairly certain that ODFW wouldn't want any part of a structure permanently in the water that boats could hit. Perhaps I'm wrong on this one.

The full legal deal would be a temporary recreational structure permit from DSL and a notification letter to the corps. no? Not sure who owns the nearshore areas at sauvie. Could be DSL, could be WDFW.

Any who...thoughts, comments, suggestions. Insults? Smile

Welcome to the Dark Side PMB! What might be a good way to start is to build a small floating kicker. The hardest part of this how to anchor it.

I'm sure it'd be really fun to hit. I've boardslid some logs before floating by at Sauvie's. One problem might be anchoring it far enough from shore in the deep water. Any good ideas on maneuvering it and getting it to stay in the right place?

Seems like two danforth anchors would work. One at each end.

I think the anchoring part would be fairly easy by using opposing sand anchors .http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1026267 or perhaps a helical soil anchor ar a simple fluke design boat anchor.

The design I was thinking of would actually rest on the bottom (think t type bottom with short lengths of rebar that would sink into the sand). The upper portions would slide into these two base parts and could be adjusted based on water depths.

I think the biggest issue would be having this weird structure in the water. Any thoughts on that?

Bettyboarder--have you talked to ODFW about a clean up yet?

Those inflatable ones are fun, but they fall apart quickly. Plus they're mushy.

Now this is something my crew and I could definitely help out with, North PDX is our turf.

The water gets deep super quick doesn't it? floating is the way to go unless the water is like 6 feet deep.

Plop, plop, flush, flush. . . I just sent a brownback corn trout down river to spawn. . .slide on that in a couple of days. Razz But seriously, any steel structure would also have to be hidden well enough to be safe from any metal scavenging meth-heads too.

As far as placement and anchoring goes, I think placement up by the nude beach where there is little current and shallow water would work best. Placement by the normal launch would be very difficult without a boat IMO.

I've got a 2 piece slider already built...... in NE-PDX.

6ft up and 9 ft flat....I'm sure if you want to try out some float ideas it'd be cool.

I had a slider for wakeboarding back in the day. a long flat section was floating....then, we had a little booter to get on it... you could connect them for a easy up to the slider, or you could gap it to get steezzy.

With 2 pieces, you could transport it easier.

otherwise, like Sleestack says, we could just put mine in the water for now(up by the nudies in the shallower water), then take it out when we leave. It will fit in a full-size truck bed, or even on top of an SUV.

I agree portable would be best, then you could take it to the Hood too.

Sauvies is perfect slider wind, steady and light.

I don't think current would be too much of a concern. Who kites by the nudies anyways? Lunching wouldn't be an issue if it floats. (I KNEW I shouldn't have gotten rid of that 55gallon drum!!)

plastic drums can be acquired from car washes though. However, I should point out that nobody has mentioned what ODFW would think.....

In the Midwest, we would go to all the marinas and ask for the large styrofoam blocks they use to store boats on....then you can "box" them in to the slider to float it.

Does it matter if u're only keeping it there for a few hours? How's that different than anchoring your boat or jetski there for the same time? Pardon my ignorance.

No ignorance Gene, I'm just wondering what people think we should do with this thing when we are done using it? I can build it to store "flat" and bury it in the sand.. but if someone unearths it..there goes couple hundred in steel...

Then again, not many people in "our" section of the beach. Perhaps on the other side of the barbed wire fence in the parking lot? It would be nice to stash it within walking distance so we wouldn't have to transport it by truck.

If we put chanson's wood thing out there, I bet it would last a week or maybe two before someone beat the shit out of it or ODFW hauled it away. NO?
