If anyone has experience with the 2008 OR Rise kites...

I am considering putting together a 2-kite '08 OR Rise quiver, and am wondering if I should go with 8/12m or 10/14m. I weigh between 200-210, have 130cm and 147cm twin tips, plus a small strapped surfboard as a possible lightwind option. Plan on riding mostly Gorge (mainly Stevenson), some coast and some Sauvies. I'm still a beginner so I'm not too concerned about being able to go out when it's really nuking (i.e. not considering a 6m).

Ideally I'd like to have 3 kites but don't have the funds for that right now.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Not that I have riden a Rise, but I would recommend the 8/12 quiver. We weigh about the same, and I have a 9/13 waroo quiver with just one 138 board. Given that you are a beginner, with so many board options, I think that would be your best bet. On a side note, there were times where I wish I had a smaller kite than a 9 when at the gorge.

...just my .02 cents

I'm considering SS Revs and Naish Cults as well, but I've got a line on a pretty good deal for the ORs so it's coming down to a matter of $$$.

you could always go used..I mean how used can a REV be at this point.

I scored a 9 and 11 that are pretty much new for $1900. I know your probably going to get the OR's for cheaper than that but then again, I would think with the Rev's your lust for new gear would be quenched for several years.

Give it some thought. Also, yuou could grow into a REV instead of growing out of some other kite,

If you see Crazy C on the beach - ask him. He's doin the 8/ 12 quiver I think and he is about your size. They seem to be a real stable kite.

the 14m has better low end than my old 20m yarga, its an awesome lite conditions kite that holds its own up into the lower 20's.
the 10m has amazing range, for me at 200lbs it gets me out and jumping in 16-18kts and jumps huge in winds over 20.
If you weigh less, you could get the 8/14 and still have overlap.
This is a very grunty kite, I've flown the 6m in 20knots with a surfboard and could point upwind no problem. This is the same kite that can go up into 40plus!
The Rev is a great kite too, but the vents in the new Rise's give these kites a real edge when it comes down to power strokes, pointing high and absorbing gusts. They are simply amazing!Cool

I've been riding Ocean Rodeo kites for the past two and a half years. The 8/12 quiver is the way to go. The rise kites are alot like the revs with a touch more bar pressure and more grunt, plus they are built for durability (bombproof). This year they have vents in the canopy which help to keep the kite from backstalling and to eat up the gusts (very nice for easterlies at rooster or gorge in general). I've only been out a handfull of times on the 2008 but so far so good. I was hesitant about the vents at first because I liked the 2007 rise line so much but they really do work. This years kites sit at the edge of the window better and have a bit more range than last years. They have improved the bar this year by adding a stainless steal center hole and 650 lb test lines. There's a ton of sheeting on this bar so the depower is great. Windance just started carrying OR and they are putting on a demo in May. If anyone is intersted in testing them out before then let me know. Also, Chanson posted some pics a few weeks ago from a ponds sesh on Feb 17th and 18th of me, jackie and carl. Should be pics of the 6, 8 and 12.

I didn't know it was a requirement to fly SS in the gorge.

Alien-
Sounds like the 10/14 might be a good option for the requirements you’ve listed.
What’s the size of your kite surf board?
Stevenson can be windy at times; however there are more windier places in the gorge when it’s on… For your size the 10m would work well when it’s on and the 14m for the lighter days, Sauvies and using that kite surf board.

(rodeo clown & sals3764) have great input as well.

WINDANCE in Hood River has a couple of OR Rise kites for Demo; stop by and try them out, close by the Sandbar and convenient… Wink

Dude if you are going to be riding the gorge get the 8-12. You will be set. 14 is just to big IMO. Do check with CrazyC about picking up the kites. I know that he sells his at the end of the year and gets them early on. I tried one of them but I'm one of those weirdos who needs the bar pressure (or maybe I'm just still a noob and don't know it), otherwise I would have gotten them from him. I think he might have some up for sale. PM him would be my suggestion if you are serious about OR.

Otherwise get a 2006 9m X-bow. I love that kite and in my opinion you really don't need anything else!

If you don't talk to crazyc check this out:

If you decide not to get the OR. I do have the above mentioned kite for sale in excellent condition. It is pretty bad ass kite. The first year of CB's were the best in terms of performance according to many though I don't know what the 08's will fly like.

I'm thinking around $400?
