any tips on anything? where to stay, where to kite, where to eat

Stay the heck away from belize city (except to fly in ) then go to ambergris cay to base off from to kitesurf. You can go right from ambergris or hire a boat to go to one of the other smaller cays

Word is that Cay Caulker is the place to go for kiting in Belize. Please post pics after your trip! Very Happy

was at c caulker one weekend last april, not quite windy enough those 2 days,
Saw the Belizean pro out riding with a 16 bow, barely staying upwind. Did see wind in the mid teens when I was on the mainland up near Guatemala though Rolling Eyes

Probably better trades later in year.

Beer on caulker was much cheaper than $4.
No good beach launch, tiny beaches, lots of mangroves.
Launch from dock, boat or walk out in shallows.
Mind the urchins.
1barrel is a taste not easily acquired in a short stay.
BYO gear (and rum, if you are particular).

Life is hard there, lots of poverty.
Met some nice folks in Belize, not kiters though.
Really one of the most beautiful places I have been, want to go back.

My wife and I will be in Belize the last week in Feb and first three weeks of march. We were there last year at this time and we kited 20 out of 25 days. We kited mostly on a 12m and 14m "C" kites. 5 of those days were 10m. I have to admit Belize isn't the windiest place on the planet but it's hair dryer steady, most of the time around 15-20 knots. There's no doubt there'll be a couple down days but well worth it to kite in such a beautiful place and the water's above 80. There's several wave spots and loads of butter.

In our crew we will have 8-12 kiters. We are staying at the north end of Ambrigous. I don't think Belize is the best place to learn, if you are a decent kiter it can be amazing. The wind is often on shore but isn't a big deal cause you can stand up most places. There are a lot of docks in town but if you go out of town they are more spread out. The beaches are smaller but plenty to get out. We rig our kites then walk about half a football field out into the water and launch there, even that far out it's still knee deep where were at.

This year were working with Chris and Paul at Sail Sports Belize, we are organizing a 15 mile down winder from Ambrigous to Caulker. We have two chase boats and are getting organized, should be a riot. Between our two crew's we could have as many as 18 kiters on the down winder.

Anyway I think Belize is like any kiting location. With some luck on your side you should get 75% kitable days. We like to extend our stay as long as we can just in case we hit it wrong and end up in a week long light wind spell.

Another thing I love about Belize is if it doesn't blow there is ton's of stuff to do. From fishing to spelunking. We'll even do some wake boarding behind a boat this year if it doesn't blow.

10 days away can't wait.

By the way the sensor there isn't very accurate you have to go by the gusts. The sensor is behind some palms and buildings.
