I'm headed down to Los Borillos and LaVantanna for my first time. Can anyone give me a heads up, or some pointers on what to take and what to expect. I'll be flying down and renting a rig in Cabo. Not quite sure if I'll be able to take everything I want to.
We're actually staying in Los Borillos is their good kiting their??
I've only been kiting for a year, but had windsurfed for a number of years I've been flying a Cabrinah Crossbow 12 meter but thought about purchasing another kite before I leave maybe a 7 meter.
Any info or recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks!!

Both are good spots. Los Barriles definitely has some good kiting. Just go to the North end of town and talk to Megan and Ian there. They have a little shack where they teach on the beach. You'll definitely get a lot of wind during the season there. Winds in the 20-30mph range are fairly common so a 7 or 9m would be good to have. La Ventana has a bit more wind on average due to some thermal effects, but Los Barriles blows pretty hard as well. On a day when La Ventana has good wind you'll almost certainly have some decent wind at Los Barriles too. If La Ventana is blowing light in the mid teens then you may not have much usable wind at LB. On the other hand we got a day or two at La Ribera (bit south of Los Barriles) when the winds were slightly side-offshore elsewhere and that was probably the best spot for those days. Swell can also be bigger at Los Barriles since there's no island blocking it from the open sea, but there's not a bit kiteboarding crowd there. La Ventana is packed with riders during peak season where as Los Barriles is a pretty laid back town with probably 1-2 dozen kiters for the most part. For a more exciting time and bigger kiting vibe definitely hit La Ventana. Check out La Ribera though if you want to do a bit of wave riding. That was the most fun spot we hit while we were down there. Sorry if I rambled a bit. Hope this helps.

Bring some warm clothes! It's been pretty chilly this week and the hoodie sweatshirts have come in handy.

I haven't kited at Los B before but have stopped in a few times and checked out the scene on our way to and from LV. Overall I think LV is a more forgiving spot for beginner and intermediate riders with the way the beach curves into a nice catchers mitt for when things go wrong. Los B seemed to be very choppy and has a gnarly shore break to deal with.

Plus, if you go to LV you're sure to run into some of the NW crew!

" Los Barriles (The Barrels)
Los Barriles or in english, The Barrels, was apparently so named because years ago the ships would dock here to fill their water barrels with fresh water. At the entrance to the town they have a very nice arrangement of barrels turned into water fountains."

A 9 meter would probably come in handy for bothe spots. Leave the full wetsuit at home, a shortie is all you need there. I have been going to los barriles for quite a few years and have made it up to la ventana also. A 12 and 9 should just about cover the conditions down there if you have a larger board for the light wind days. I actualy prefer the large beaches and breaking waves on the bigger days at los barriles to the flat water at ventana. Check out La Ribera and Cabo Pulmo also. nice waves at La Ribera, but onshore wind. Cabo Pulmo has a nice reef for snorkeling the whitest sand in baja, and crystal clear water, but watch out for the reef if you kite there. I have some scars on my feet as a souvenir from kiting that spot.

Bring a 3/2 unless you like being cold......The water does stay pretty warm, but the wind gets cooler in January and February especially if the sun doesn't come out like last week.

The only ones not wearing rubber were Grom and Shannon, but they must have some sort of pact between the two of them to never wear a wetsuit.

Maybe I am just getting whimpy or something, but I rather be warm than cold.

I just got back and also flew in to Cabo, we rented a four door pick up, worked well, BUT we took the wrong road and it took a few hours longer because we ended up on a road fit for a motorcycle, Get good directions!

Wytcap,

You had good directions but....failed to follow them. Don't turn East until you get to San Antonio or you will take the Los Barillos to La Ventana coast road which is more fitted for two wheelers.

We own a kiteschool in Los Barriles and we have had an awesome season this year! Many days are 7m-9m wind and overhead swell. There have been very few days where you would need more kite than a 9 or 10m. If you have a directional I recommend it for Los Barriles, the swell riding here is great! The water is warming up so you shouldnt need anymore than a shorty wetsuit.

I havent been to La Ventana this season but hear they have had the same sort of wind.

Have a great trip!

they are working hard on the road from San Antonio to Los Planes - its a little marginal with a mini van but expect they will finish this year and have it paved for next year? amazing

my experience is La Ventana has more consistent wind as it gets a better thermal

just my thoughts.....
