When Kiting and Paragliding get dull, we whip out some seriously fast flying toys. These are of Tomas Obberainer. A friend of mine who is a test pilot for Swing in Germany.

Cliff launch in waist high brush at Kahana. This is as dangerous as it gets folks.

On launch at Koko Crater. Super steep grabby rock, and about a 100ft drop about 4ft from his right foot.

It takes me about 24-25mph of straight-in wind to soar with a 14M Gin Nano. Soaring with a 14M speed wing is spooky. Soaring with a 10M wing would be over the top (and hopefully not over the back Smile

At Koko it was two minute sled rides, but Kahana was blowing hard enough and the cliff steep enough that soaring was possible.

This wing that Tomas is on is no regular Gin/Ozone speed wing. It is a four riser mini paraglider that has a thin paragliding profile and is super high performance and requires an expert/pro/test level pilot. I would not even go close to it, and at a P3 level... would probably die if I tried to fly it.

When I speed fly I am using either a 12m Nano or Bullet which are almost impossible to collapse... The prototype that Tomas was using would collapse if you sneezed incorrectly under it, and watching him fly was a treat as the guy is just that good.

That is really superbadass.

Have you done much in OR/WA - have seen the paragliders at Toutle Valley at St. Helens, Bingen, Oceanside and tow-up at Sunset beach.

Always stop stand around slack-jawed. Sorta like watching the kiteboarders at the event site in 99... hmm.....
