Sun Jan 06, 08 8:27 pm Slingshot Surefire spreader bar |
|
|
I just recently purchased a Slingshot Surefire spreader bar. I love the concept and most of the time it works just fine; however, when I ride aggressively toeside especially when snowkiting, because my chicken loop gets stiff, the chicken loop pushes its way out of the donkey dick clip and I'm out. Any remedies for this?? Thanks a bunch!

I had that problem until i found out that once you are hooked in you have to snap the donkey dick up into the loop of the hook and not just swing it into place. This doesn't interfere with the release at all. If you are already doing this i dunno..........

JJ is correct, i don't mean the donkey dick on the loop I mean the little black plastic clip on the hook. The photo shows it in place.

I've broken two of those spreader bars. Once the mechanism locking the hook in place broke off and rendered the spreader bar useless, and another time the metal rod that the hook sits on broke off completely mid jump. Since the leash is attached to that rod as well the kite flew away (and was luckily recovered by a helpful rider). With all the 5line and flat kites out there you don't need the surefire spreader bar to have a spinnable bar/leash system so I don't see the point in using it. I personally prefer the safety and reliability of the simpler clutter free spreader bars such as DaKine, etc.

I have never accidentally released that either. I have had the little black button break off, but I just cover the lever with duct tape and it works great.
I bought this because I had my donkey dick fail on me a couple of times and lost my kite because of it. I don't actually use the leash attachment anymore, I just have a handlepass leash set up, but it is a great additional safety system for your kite. It basically gives you another release option.

I have had my donkey dick come out before and I lost the kite. It has happened to me twice.

Huh, maybe mine is defective. When I spin a 180 from heelside to toeside and lean away from my kite I pop right out of the backside of the donkey clip. SUX!

Yup, that is the best thing about it. No matter what kite I fly, my safety release is always the same. It is now an instinctual reaction for me to be able to reach for it w/o looking or thinking about it.
It has saved my butt a couple times....times when if I had to remember if I was going for a pull or push release...or maybe a knob...the delay would have meant trouble.
All the positives aside, SS has not changed this design in a while. Maybe that is just because it works, but I think an upgraded surefire would be nice. Something that addresses some of the detriments people noted on these threads (hook shape, better toe side performance, etc.)
It is a great product, though. Don't hesitate to buy it.
