				| Tue Oct 02, 07 4:16 am    Donations REquested for At-Risk Ski Program Here in HRValley | |
				|
 |
				| I'm teaching a group of kids how to snowboard/ski. This will be the 2nd year we do this and I'm looking for your old ski stuff: 1. Goggles
 2. Jackets
 3. Pants
 4. Gloves
 5. ECT..

If you have usable ski clothing that you would like to donate for highly at risk kids then let me know. These kids need items that will keep them warm and comfy while they learn to ski!!

This program takes kids, highly at-risk kids, to the HR Meadows and allows them to take 3 lessons over the winter. We are always short on goggles, and waterproof clothing, and gloves.

It's the most amazing thing in the world to see kids take to the snow for the first time! If you would like to volunteer to come with us that works too!

My work number is 541-387-5703. Tax write offs cab be arranged! If you would just like to loan your gear you can that too.

 Thanks,
 Ron

				| I have a bunch of older gloves and a set of goggles you can have. This is a rad idea and something I've thought about doing myself. Do you do the lessons or is it something Meadows does? I'd actually be interested in helping out with this cause. | |

				| Tue Oct 02, 07 11:59 am    You bet you can help! | |
				|
 |
				| The students are in my class at the Coe Learning Program. If you have stuff you want to donate just let me know where to pick it up, or you can drop it off at 1011 Eugene St. Hood River.
Forest, If you want to volunteer that would be great! There are a few hoops to jump through but I can cover that with you in a min or two.

The kids in this program are amazing! It really is cool to see a kid who's never snowboarder or skied take his/her first carving controlled turn. The smiles spread like wildfire. It will change your heart and enhance your life for certain.

Last year we took up 7 kids and purchased the 3 lesson beg. package. I had 2 volunteers and enough money to pay for their lunch and one all day lift ticket. As far as money this year I'm still up in the air. I've got my eye on a couple of grants through The Lion's Club and DHS.

For now no kites, as liability is a problem,

				| Forget the lift tickets, you could just take them up to a hill and hike. | |

				| Tue Oct 02, 07 12:43 pm    Ya know that is a great idea! | |

				| I've thought about taking them cross country skiing, but the effort required is intense for some kids with little or no athletic ability. Last year I had a range of kids with really differing abilities. ONe kid was up and rocking the snowboard at the bunny hill within the first lesson. Another kid was in the lodge looking for food. It was fun because we had options due to solid supervision volunteers!
I have not taken them on a hike, but we will be doing some walking to get in shape.

 You better join us

				| We should touch base later this Fall season, after we get our shop fully switched over to winter mode. I have a bunch of old skis and snowboard boots downstairs in our shop storage. These items are not really sellable for us, but could definitely be useable for kids wanting to get out on the snow.

I'll have to go through the gear to see what stuff is kids size and what stuff is adult sized.

Give me a call at the shop(541)386-4464 or email me at pepi@gorge.net

 Thanks
 Pepi

				| i may have a pair of gogs and i'll check on the other stuff.
i spent some serious blood, sweat, and tears working w/ at-risk and adjudicated youth and really can't recommend it enough to anyone who's reading this. you can change lives for the better and effect a kid so profoundly for the good - i've never done any work that was so good for my body, mind and spirit. get some. the youth really need you. peace

				| Fri Oct 05, 07 11:46 am    OK, Here's another shout out! | |
				|
 |
				| If you have old gear and you want to give to kids who will use it and value it, then let me know where to contact you. I appreciate volunteers as well. Last year the ladies from Beties360 provided some supervision on one of the 4 trips to the hill.
If you want to some good Karma then come and volunteer this winter. Give me a contact number and or and address and I will get back to you.

 Thanks,
 Ron

				| Sun Oct 07, 07 5:27 am    Thanks Dcrow! Your jacket and pants will bring a smile to.. | |

 |
				| students for sure! Anybody in the Eugene area who has surplus jackets, pants, gloves or usable things for cold weather let me know.
The gear doesn't have to be perfect! These kids have only cotton stuff and cheap jackets. Last year I bummed gear from staff at Hood River Schools and we made out fine. But, with this donated stuff kids will have gear that keeps them warm. If they need it I'll let em have it!

Keep posted for possible fund raiser to cover the costs of the ski/snowboarding lessons.
