I did submit a photo to Aaron from a place we do not speak of. I hope I don't get killed if it goes to print. It was a nice photo though |

New slogan for Hein boards - Get Your Grump On!
You know, I absolutely don't understand the whole localism, not in my backyard thing. All this go ride somewhere else, don't tell anybody about my beach or my riding spot, or my swell, or my wind... sounds like a bunch of spoiled kids that don't want anybody in their sandbox.
I ride at Stevenson 98% of the time during the summer and this spot has THE smallest launch point in the entire Gorge, maybe the world! One person in or out at a time. Yet once you wait a minute or two to take your turn and get on the water the whole freakin' river is open to use! There's room for everybody - just line up your kites on the grass with everybody else and keep your lines rolled up till you're ready to launch. It's education not intimidation that make a site work for everybody.
There may be a few people that don't want anymore kiters at Stevenson but if you see my and my crew there we will greet you with a smile and answer all of your questions about the launch. Every time. We have fun at Stevenson - taking pictures, sitting in the peanut gallery, beers at the end of the day, throw downs, stupid hat days, etc... And we don't mind sharing the stoke. Personally I like it when the HR crew shows up, when the Canadians come to town, when East Coasters show up wide eyed and in awe of the beauty of the gorge and the sketchyness of the launch. This sport is a blast and I love watching the kids like Tucker, Dylan, Ian, Josh, Ben, Grom, Shan, etc... push us OG's and middle of the road cruisers to do just a little more.
I like the magazines, this forum with all the pics (yeah Henry!), the newspaper articles, anything that gives me another shot of stoke. Keeping it hidden away and only sharing with your 4 or 5 best buddies and trying to keep everybody else out just doesn't fit with me.
I'm with Phil on this:
| Quote: | Funny the true locals (the ones that practically live at Rufus) didn't seem to mind our presence. Happy smiling people talking about their session and sharing info about gear and riding styles. Friends sharing beers and stoked on watching each other huck a few in the messy 5m wind. Lots of room on tons of big swell between the launch and the dam. Didn't see Hein.
Nobody is promoting anything, we're just posting a few pics of our friends. Some eye candy to look at while its raining. Its fun. We're not telling anyone to go to Rufus, IWindsurf does that.
I see two possibilities for the continuation of this sport:
1) Build a stoked community of energitic riders who love charging it even in cold and strong wind conditions. Self regulate kooks and educate everyone. Get young blood influence by keeping our sport fresh and interesting.

As soon as we stop getting new faces into the sport it will die. There wont be any need for Slingshot/Naish/Best/North/LF, etc.. to come out with a new kite or a new board because all 200 of us in the Gorge will still be riding the same old gear year after year. And it will get stale and die. The amazing advances in our gear the last 5 years, and especially the last 2 is precicesly because there are more people getting into the sport. If it was still the same exclusive crowd of 1999/2000, when the sport was "core", you'd all still be riding a 1999 kite - that sucked. How many of the current set of whiners out there are still riding gear that is more than 2 years old? Is there anybody disappointed that kite prices have come down while quality and usability have gone up? If so, I have a couple of 2003/4 kites I need to sell so I can buy an '08 Rev or Nemi HP.
Lighten up - go kiting. And smile - it's supposed to be fun.

naw, I'm too pooped.
After yesterdays 8 hour drive & 6 hours of water time at lyle and the efforts involved in putting a bullet in SKA's head, Yup, the association is now history, I really don't have the bandwidth or desire to argue.
but I would like to ride one of your boards...
Remind me again, when is the Hein demo day?
cheers,

Why not instead of avoiding the kooks, confront them. There has to be repercussions for stupid actions.
If its too crowded then spread out. Most people insist in riding right in front of where they launched, thus it gets crowded. Usually there is tons of room upwind and downwind. Maybe Hein could do some math for us and figure out how many kiters could fit in-between Rooster Rock and Port Kelly.
Me, I'd love to see an influx of new talented riders. If growth stops the sport dies, windsurfing is a good example. Do we want that fate for kiteboarding? Or would you like to see it keep progressing?
Anyway if you guys were at Rufus on Sunday you would be laughing at this thread. It was 60 degrees and nukey 5m-7m wind. More windsurfers than kiters. |

The photo's are awesome. I love to see the photos from people's sessions. I wish we could ride all the time and not just on the weekends but alot of people including myself have to work/go to school. Anyway Tony said it best

Hmmmm,
I was recently at the Seattle Kiteboard Assc. kite night. I overheard two girl's talking about how these forums "are just grown men's excuse to gossip".
I'd guess I'd never thought of it that way, but this stormy Monday it's kind of true. |

| I have never really met Hein, but one day we were at the North coast and this guy was standing at the top of the bluff doing a wind song and dance. The othres there said that was Hein. A little later we were looking at solid 12m downwinders from parking lot B to the Shipwreck. As long as Hein keeps doing his wind song and dance he is ok by me. Hein come back out to the coast! We need at least one more day this season! |

It must be raining in Portland and Seattle. While all of you were spending the day on this thread, you missed a killer day at Lyle today!!! Steady, windy, sunny... rollin' kickers all day!

I like kiting with folks who are happy to be on the water--kite/sail/whatever. Had a great time at Rufus with you all. Super fun to ride swell with Steve, Phil, Pat, Mark, Erik, Tom, Rob Wymore and especially Jane Parker while she was sailing. Many more of you I know by face, but not by name. No matter--what a friendly groove you got goin'! I enjoyed watching the huck zone by the camera too. Nice group of friendly folks.
Hope to see all of you out there again before the chill begins.
