Of course his post just bumps this thread back up to the top.

You have two very competing issues with kiteboarding.

On one hand, the more popular the sport gets, the more crowded the beaches.

On the other hand, the more popular the sport gets, the beter the gear gets.

I really don't think posting pictures on this forum is going to bring swarms of newbs to the sport. videos on youtube may however do that.

crank this: sufur

Funny the true locals (the ones that practically live at Rufus) didn't seem to mind our presence. Happy smiling people talking about their session and sharing info about gear and riding styles. Friends sharing beers and stoked on watching each other huck a few in the messy 5m wind. Lots of room on tons of big swell between the launch and the dam. Didn't see Hein.

Nobody is promoting anything, we're just posting a few pics of our friends. Some eye candy to look at while its raining. Its fun. We're not telling anyone to go to Rufus, IWindsurf does that.

I see two possibilities for the continuation of this sport:

1) Build a stoked community of energitic riders who love charging it even in cold and strong wind conditions. Self regulate kooks and educate everyone. Get young blood influence by keeping our sport fresh and interesting.

Or

2) Turn into a bunch of cranky localism sticks in the mud who don't want anyone new at "their spot." Stiffle growth, don't share, don't help, make it a sport of mental masturbation. Use darwinism theory alone to regulate kooks, so that we all look like a bunch of idiots to everyone else. Get maimed, banned, and stereotyped. Watch the sport slowly grow old and die. Basically, become Windsurfing.

It seems to me the problem is not overcrowding its KOOKS. And being able to kill the kook cancer is about keeping people informed and building a community of safe, smart, and capable kiters. And if we can stoke the fire by actually trying to have fun taking photos of each other, cool. WTF are you doing tricks for if you don't want anybody to see them?

Anyway if anyone feels like Hein feel free to let me know either in person or on the forum.

Is that really true? Kiting seems to be turning into how 14 year olds snowboard. Sit on their asses all day in the snow taking turns as they and their crowd of buddies hit a jump ever 5 minutes. Cool.

Hey snowboarding and kiteboarding are whatever you want them to be. Nobody can define what you should be doing to get your stoke.

But if somebody catches you having fun with a lens, then great, right? I don't see a lot of people clamering to shut down the magazines. They have photos and writeups from riders all over. Sometimes they profile the Northwest... Does everybody freak out, mail the editor, flame Aaron Sales?

Just wait you haven't seen anything yet... I'm going to post all kinds of photos from the REAL secret spots, riding my Hein board. Evil or Very Mad

Interesting where this thread is going.

But I have also expressed concern about kiting becoming more popular and spots getting crowded -
http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-3464.html&highlight=surfing

The thread was essentially hijacked and got turned into a discussion about a reel bar. But anyways, the fact of the matter is that kiting is becoming more popular - spots are becoming more crowded - and year after year we are going to have more kiters. Its a wave and we just happen to be on the leading edge of it. You really can't stop the wave - all you can do is learn to live with it - ride it or get crushed with it.

Maybe Hein has the answer - (at least a portion of it) - don't ride on the weekends - this will allow you to avoid most of the kooks. However, for many of us - riding on the weekends (and the ocasional weeknight) is the only option. But the crowds are coming - you are seeing kiteboarding more and more in the media - advertisers are using as a way to promote their product - for example, a kiteboarder was on the cover of outdoor magazine a while back and yahoo vacations featured a kiteboarder cruising off in the sunset.
