A group of us were planning on going to Waldport for some kiting and surfing but I have seen some negative reviews on its consistency. Is it just being hyped up because the Richman bros were there, or can it offer good sessions. I need to know ASAP as some of these people are bringing the whole family and they are looking for a compromising spot where they can kite while their family can hit up some small shops and chill on the beach.

i've been to waldportonly for a couple days but i found the bay gets an interesting north wind in the evening. super light but actually pretty good- granted it's being fed through a neighborhood and hotel (and a hill!) it kinda channels together pretty nice and works when you can't kite on the ocean.

the river mouth never really worked for us- it was too light then.

newport is just up the way so if it isn't on at waldport you have that to shoot for, you could even do a downwinder from there to waldport.

i know shawn and jessie even kited the bay further south at Netarts too but i wouldn't reccomend that. a great rocky coastline though.

Maui,

there is nothing in Waldport. i have been living, kiting, surfing, windsurfing the oregon coast for close to 20 years and only once have i been in the water at Waldport.

Waldport has nothing to offer for the activities listed above.

go to Newport. the shot of the Richman brothers in the article you read was actually taken at the S. Beach in Newport. there is plenty to do there for the rest of the family, aquarium, bay waterfront, Nye beach etc. plus there are good spots for all type of surfing, longboard, shortboard etc. if the surf is small go to Beverly just north of Newport for kiting and surfing.

have fun.

that is correct, the magazine misquoted the location of that shot.

the latest issue of kiteboarding mag, with the waldport bridge on the cover. I stayed in waldport with the bros and found it to be ok for a few days we were there, guess it just depends on the time frame you choose.

The rare southwesterly on a non-rainy day works best on the bay. Other than that you're talking flukey northerlies, and the ocean wind tends to drop the further you go from Newport. The magazine article was mostly BS, and the idea that a 1200 lot golf course subdivision is going to a kiteboarding mecca residential resort is laughable, to say the least. I'll bet similar articles have appeared in golfer magazines, fishing and hunting journals, etc.

If you do go to Waldport, check out the flea market shop along Hwy. 101 and drop into Mike and Pauline's surf shop next door to say hello. They rent sea kayaks there too, which may be the best thing going at Alsea Bay. A fun thing to do is do a drop off at Tidewater on an ebb tide and cruise back into town.

true, true but keep in mind OceanSide/Netars has one of the nicest "peelers" on the north coast

With my experience at Oceanside....YES, some of those breaks are really hard to beat...!!!!!!!!!!! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil I have had my best wave riding there!!!!they just keep peeling like JP said........The thing is you need the wind to be more NW than N(because of those huge rocks to the north), it chuncks-up the wind...when the wind is clean, get ready for some epic waves...they almost seem fake!! Then, when you get down to Netarts bay, the current swirls-up the waves and mashes them up a bit....The bay could be nice for flat water, but everytime I ride there, the tide/current is so strong, you don't really want to put your kite down...and you get to play with tons of seals. Very Happy

I have always thought it would be good on the far south side of the bay during high tide..tons of flat water....it fills way in and the current can't be that strong way in there...Probably work on a NW or maybe a SW day..

You guys need a geography lesson - Walport is only 35miles from Florence - over 80 miles to Netarts. Lots of goodness between the two.
