Overall coverage (US) and most friends/family are on Verizon with no charge calling V to V phones.

I know I can't get everything but it seems lame that they don't have coverage in HR Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

t-mobile
works everywhere i've ever used it
plus you get international coverage vs sprint you cannot. used to have sprint.
att and tmobile also use sim chips so your number and contacts stay on the chip so you can easily switch phones.

This post had me mad that I changed to Verizon,,

After 10 days in the Gorge, the end of July,
Rufus, HR, Stevenson and Sunset Beach.

I had data/internet service on my Verizon Treo 750P.

Not pimping the service, just happy to get wind reports. (and e-mail)

Heading back next week for 10 more Gorgous days.

My MotoQ with Verizon has service in all the hot spots.......Aside from the cost, I'm happy with my service.

It must be fairly recent then because I switched about 2 months ago from Verizon because my internet did not work. It's makes me wonder too if you have a better plan/phone maybe it will work in the Gorge.

right, i don't think verizon changed anything. it seems to only work if you have an expensive PDA data plan, not the basic $5 plan.

yeah they don't have data coverage in the gorge... i have checked with verizon a few times since this original post. they switch to another carrier for the gorge... and there are no plans to cover the gorge as of yet.

i am planning on switching to the death star this winter after my term is up so don't get stuck with 175 early term fee.

Somewhat related, my gf got an AT&T phone instead of T-Mobile (which I still have) and we find that both her voice & data coverage is much better than T-Mobile in the Gorge.

I know nothing about other carriers, and also nothing about 3G coverage with AT&T or T-Mobile.

This has been a cheaper, more reliable, contract-free alternative for me to Gorge.net:

http://www.hrec.coop/internet/sv-wireless.htm

For a cell phone I have an older Sanyo 4930 on an older CDMA plan. The voice quality is exceptional, coverage has been pretty much everywhere I've been in the country and even parts of Canada, the phone has lasted forever and had great battery life, and the data access to iKitesurf was dog slow but reliable. Generally speaking, more modern (3G/4G) networks steal voice bandwidth for data, so you get your web pages faster but sound like crap. When people I'm talking with sound like they're in a tin can and/or drop calls I ask if they're on AT&T. They usually say yes. Unfortunately most everyone in Hood River uses AT&T so we hooked my Mom up with a plan on them because mobile-to-mobile is free.

Coverage around the Gorge usually drops out around Dee-Parkdale on 35, but I've heard this isn't just Sprint. I also had problems on the coast back when I lived in Corvallis, but it's been radically improved in the past few years. I've had billing problems with Sprint a few times in the past decade, but had more problems (lost messages, dropped calls, crappy phones, people saying VM never came up or the phone just didn't ring) in the first month when I had AT&T, then went to cancel under their 30-day trial policy and they told me I was on day 31 so had to stay or pay. So if I had to leave Sprint I'd go to Verizon, but I won't hide my anti-AT&T bias.
