I have seen some videos of folks doing this tack on wave/swell face and I want to learn this manuever. Any tips to get started? I'd like to avoid foil collision unpleasantness too.

Thanks,
Eric

Have you searched and viewed through any of "Gunnar "Chinatown" Biniasch" videos? He covers this and all things foil.
Here's one if you've got Facebook:

and another:

Then teach me after you get it Smile

Oops. Sorry, guess not.
Here's the full list of Gunnar Vimeo stuff. Including tacks:

Assume you mean upwind 180 (tack) rather than downwind 180 (gybe)?

I've wanted to do these ever since the first of the Greg/BRM/Cloud foiling videos. A functional move (tack) that also looks cool. It is also the basis for 360....not at all functional, but would be fun.

I have trouble getting my head around it though. I suggest you try it on land first with a trainer kite. It took me a dozen attempts before I stopped pulling with the wrong hand and tomahawking the kite. It is similar to a backroll in kite flying, as you spin under the kite, but the kite should not move during the turn. But my instinct is to pull with the wrong hand.

The other problem is you need to commit and then do it with some speed, if you hope to get around the turn and then not bog down when you re-engage kite the other way. The problem being too chicken. Wink

I've only tried it a couple times on water, both unsuccessful, and the swim after has kept me from trying again. It is also worthwhile to attempt it first on a surfboard, just to get the mechanics down with less going on and less consequence.

Thanks, Maybe wandering off-topic but another "functional" desire for me to master this is for the many days when my largest kite & longest lines are just barely sufficient to nicely foil our bay in 9mph Mexico. This... until I do my tightest heal or toe-side jibe. A fun day goes south as the lines slacken and kite struggles. Any tack would cure this.

I am not much of a looper, but that sounds like something you may need to do. From what I can tell, a challenge in the 180 carving tack (which is what I see this tack without foot switch sometimes called) is that you need to exit the turn with speed or the foil will drop off plane. That means you need an aggressive power sine as you turn the corner, or a quick loop to get acceleration. Not unlike a normal downwind gybe, if you don't turn tight and keep the kite active, you lose your speed ... and then in light winds, that's that.

Yeah I’m talking 180 to toeside tack and I watched the same Cloud video you did. Seems like such a fun and useful wave-face move. I can do tacks on a surfboard so it sounds similar with respect to kite position in that you need to send it an hour behind you to come around.

Yeah, Watching Fred and Tak is inspiration, though perhaps not illumination...

watch where they hold bar with respect to their head and foot movement

and then give it try - a few thousand times...
