its hard to capture the steeps when your there to have fun not shot.
the first pic imagine going forward and down then hanging a hard left. the background has the same pitch. And that was one of the easier entrances. the tops were very scoured and icy.
Great ice to climb with easy access all around, lots of spots to kite if the wind would back off enough and lots of rides to be had via heli. with the triple threat options there would be no down days. that ice climb pic ir right off the road and probably 500 foot tall maybe 700' with others right next to it.

totally understand. given that the heli operations have never had anyone killed, i've always wondered if they really let normal customers on genuinely steep stuff, or tend to push them toward lower angle slopes due to avy danger and everything else. if you tell me it's steep i'll believe it, but i was curious because the first photo that pacific posted (only one with tracks) looked low angle. anyways, i'm just curious what kind of terrain they really let you ride vs. look at out the window, and in the films.
wouldn't it be cool if you were invincible and could go ride anything you want, and just restart the game if you died? that, and a 5lb personal jet pack for self-sufficient fly-to snowboarding top my personal wish list of inventions.

I had visions of riding the steep nasty stuff, thats the whole reason that we went to Valdez. The snowpack and month long wind storm however changed the game plan. We only rode a couple of lines that I would consder really steep, and they were totally scoured and wind blown, by no means letting you open it up 100%. All exposed slopes had been feeling the wrath of 80 mph winds, so we found the best snow a little lower on the mountain.
The potential in the Chugach is unreal and I am gonna go back next year in search of getting it when you can ride the nasty. I have never seen sicker more asthetic lines that scream "ride me"; as with most things timing is everything, there has to be coverage and stability to ride the stuff that is gonna scare you top to bottom.
My advise to anyone who wants to go heli in AK -- give yourself enough time to sit it out and wait. We were only there for five days and were lucky enough to ride four of them, but next time I'm gonna make sure I have enough time (10-14 days) to sit and wait for the fluff.
Generally the steepest lines are ridden in April, once the snowpack has consolidated and the weather tapers. Hopefully they get some serious snow in the next couple weeks, as the Chugach had a dry Jan/Feb, with sustained winds for a month and a half.
