I'm driving by Sherman Island this weekend and was wondering what forecasting sites to use. Never been before. I'd pack some gear if it looks promising.

Cheers!

old reliable NOAA works pretty well:

Also check BAK for spot info and more. There are a couple of basic things to know about Sherman including that the tide can play a factor. Bring cash whether you are camping or just going for the day as there is a fee.

I use ikite and noaa.

DO NOT go too far downwind - it can be brutal getting back (but it's a nice walk)
Pay attention to the walking traffic signs. You launch your kite near parking then go for a journey to the water. Wear flops or booties for the walk - the sand gets hot.

http://www.bayareakiteboarding.com/forum/ has plenty of info.

Only been there once, and the wind was light through the day but really turned on in the afternoon, (as we were already headed towards home) just as the locals said it would. Walk the launch path/trail before you hit the water so you can see what you have to navigate through to get to the river. Neat spot!

There's usually a mid-day lull, so evening riding can be incredible.

If you are just passing through then take advantage of the guys that provide a downwind service there. It will be well worth it for your first visit. They explain how the whole place works while they shuttle you upwind in a boat. They will stay to help you set up and launch. And then they effectively act as safety for your ride back..

Or, drive a few miles further and have a bucket list experience kiting downwinders, bridge to bridge, Golden Gate, at Kite the Bay with John von Tesmer
http://www.kitethebay.com/

"Come kite the bay and enjoy one of the most spectacular kitesurfing settings in the world! This Golden Gate Downwinder is an experince of a lifetime where you will start kiting near the Golden Gate Bridge and ride downwind to Treasure Island. Along the way, you will cruise pass The San Francisco cityfront and Alcatraz. The enitre session is boat supported so you are guaranteed to make it back to land. This is for advanced riders only and you must be prepared for strong, gusty winds and choppy waters."

August is usually good for wind at Sherman.

Make sure to get there EARLY, like at sunrise because by 10, it's dying fast. If you have a hydrofoil and large kite, you'll be good to go all day.
Sunset sessions have been pretty decent lately, but I've been skunked in the mornings 3 times now in the last couple of weeks. It feels like fall is coming early this year, since getting skunked at SI in late August is generally rare.
Note that I don't have a foil or large kite, because I'm too poor.
