Tue Feb 20, 07 2:29 pm web cam permanently looking at the HR sandbar |
|
|
I have just had one of my facilities people replace the Gorge LIVE camera up on the white salmon bluff, so that it basically takes a complete picture of the sandbar. Now the camera isn't the most expensive of cameras, it is an outdoor camera that is about 4 years old, and it is pretty hard to get much detail when you have so much picture from so far away, so the picture quality isn't the best, but it is a permanent lense pointed at the sandbar. ENJOY!

Actually you can't see any kites from the webcam. Here is why, first, look at the buoy, you can barely see it, and frankly you could fit probably 6 people stacked really tight in the circumference of the buoy, so it is gonna be really hard to see people out on the water.
Secondly, the canopies of the kite are never pointed perpendicular towards the camera. You'd have to have crazy mad northerly or southerlies to see the bulk of hte canopy from the camera. If you think about it, since it is generally west wind, the only things pointed to the camera are either the wingtips of the kite, which are only about 3 feet, or the profile of the leading edge. Both of which you cannot make out from the distance that the camera is placed.
I may get my company to buy another webcam that we perch on the top of our building. Last year we had one, where you could move the camera around, zoom in and out, see all the people kiting, even see people getting tea bagged.
It was sweet! so hopefully we'll put one up there again this year.

The old camera was cool - did it die? Curious how $$ that one was - or was it expensive to maintain - maybe we can have a bake sale - think people would be glad to pony up for it - sort of like crack, I imagine there are few folks having withdrawals.

actually the old cam I speak of, if it is in fact the same one your thinking of (the reason i say this is cause the URL for the old cam was never made public even tho it was publicly accessible), was donated by someone and they decided to take it back. So it didn't really cost anything, nor does it cost anything to maintain on the roof of our building, just a little bit of electricity and the cost of bandwidth which is negligible.
Anyway, the owners of the company where i work are both kiteboarder and windsurfer, so i'm pretty sure we'll get another camera up there. The most expensive thing is probably my time getting it ordered and setup.

slither made it early enough for the photo op at the spit!
colby and I went east gorge and it blew until late. both of us lit on 9m. much steadier than the wind graph portrays.
