Hey,
I was just checking out the manual for the 2006 Cab. contra 17m and their little wind chart claims the thing will fly from 5 - 15 mph w/ the average 170 lb rider. Anyone have real experience with this kite's range?

Don't think the low end is right on that, yes it'll fly very stably @ 5mph but not upwind on the water.

I fly the 14m Contra but @200# the range is more like 13-22kts with the right board selection for me.

I would say the 17m is probably 8 to 17kts @ your weight with the right board. This is what I've seen other people go out on

Maybe thats maximum board speed. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Or 5 is when it falls out of the sky and lands leading edge down 10 feet in front of you while trying to get your board on. Confused

10 average is the low end of any large kite then hope it doesn't lull much less than 7-8.

On Land,
I was rippin around faster than I could run in 5-6 mph wind with a 16.0 Naish X-4 on the beach with a mt. board
On water
some huge board and 7-9 mph wind ,bearing off
9+ stay to windward

with the proper board you could probaly ride in 5 mph winds, but not upwind, and not with speed.

on a different note:

i flew my 17m cab blacktip in 3 mph! Shocked , but on solid snowpack, and complete flat terrain... as long as you can keep it powered you can ride and even get a lil pop here an there.

it really depends on how much drag,

imo,

Never have i heard a truer statement! I love my 20.5 machine! slingshot is selling them kite complete for 800, 850, 900 for 17.5, 20.5, 25.5, respectively, on store.sskiteboarding.com, i guess they didn't sell too well cause that is cheap as shit.

The Machine is a great kite, but you don't need bigger than 17.5... just get a good lightwind board and you will be riding in less wind than anyone on a 20m.

With flat kites I wouldn't go bigger than 14m. My biggest kite this year is an 11m, and yes I still plan on plenty of light wind and coastal days. That's what the lightwind boards are for Very Happy

Hey pkh, what do you weigh / what's your light wind rig like? btw I'm $1.85 on a light day - $1.90~ on a heavy day.

It depends on if you handcuff yourself to the bar and use ankle weights

I've have dealt with gusts up to 21mph on my 20.5 machine while on my misfit 127. Anything over 18mph and your really start to think about going in a rigging down. I weighed in about 175lbs last year.

Anybody who uses ankle weights while kiting deserves a dee-dUH-DEE award.

I agree with PKH on the lightwind board in that a bigger board can make all the difference. i can easily ride my SRT 5'11" and fly my 15m in the same conditions as i can ride my 20.5 and misfit 127. It really just depends on what you feel like riding that day, but i like having both options open.

the worst part about light wind on the columbia is the fucking Gorge's ability to shut the wind off on a light day, then if you crash your kite out in the channel and find yourself in a hole where you cannot relaunch your kite. With a bigass kite like mine, it gets soaked with water and is even harder to relaunch, which is when i start praying for jet ski support.
