Wed Feb 07, 07 9:09 am Shinn Skim, any other Recommendations? |
|
|
Hey Guys,
I'm thinking about buying a Shinn Skim for my lightwind days, and those days of when I get bored of the regular board. I'm looking for recommendations on any other options. I'm looking for a skim board and wake skate crossover with some light wind ability. My problem with wake skates is that they have so much rocker, I'd have to be so powered up.
What I like about the Shinn Skim is that it has fins, foam top, and looks fun in the video of Shinn riding it. It's just a very expensive skim board. I've also thought about just drilling some holes in my skim board and putting fins on it.
Hein, maybe you've thought of making something like this? Large, flat wake skate with concave on the top like the Liquid Force Impulse.
I've seen these Surfskates too:

just got back from ventana. lots of the guys down there were talking about how this new skywalker skim has been killing it over the glide for lights wind and waves. unfortunately, nobody had one to try out when i was down there... had to stick to the Cabal 151 for the mornings before the wind came up.
this skim looks pretty sweet. i like the small size so can fit into the sedan trunk.

i hope that hein considers something like this as well. |

This is just my opinion, but I think one of the best things about my skim (Cabal) is that it doesn't have any fins. That way you can ride it slightly sideways and there is no drag. Sometimes when I'm really lit I'll push the front of the board up so only the tail is riding in the water (think tail slide.) It reduces the amount of board in the water and helps you edge out of the gust.
You can also ride over wet sand and in really shallow water.
Shinn does make those boards look good though. |

Yea, I hear ya about the lack of fins. I have a Victoria skim, and I like riding it, but it's just too skatey for my taste.
I come from a wake skating background, so I'd really like to recapture the fun of shove-its and kick-flips. |

I thought about that as well..
It seems to me like they would work fine for sure....just maybe not crazy upwind ability..
I wonder what the specs look like for the base..?
I used to wakeskate back in the day a lot actually..I have an old Hyperlite wakeskate with a huge rocker that I have been out on a couple times...its just more work going upwind..but to me its totally do-able... then you can just charge back downwind and bust-a-move. |

Nice vids, I've seen the second one before.
I still want at least some small fins on the board, I think i'll just drill some holes. Looking at Victoria's website, I see that they have a wake skim with a small fin on the back.
I will at least invest in some foam for my skim... Or maybe i just put a layer of grip tap on it and ride it with skate shoes. |

I sure do like underground boards. Just sold my FLX 142, such a solid board but it was little large for me to properly progress from intermediate to advanced. This next season I'm going to a wakeboard with bindings just to mix it up.
Are you talking about the surfboards? Their surfboards do look sweet, but I'm trying to keep it close to a wakeskate and my wakeskate/skateboard background.
I'm the furthest thing from a surfer you'll ever find. I'm a weak ass swimmer, tried to surf on a longboard once but ended up putting a nasty whole in my wife's face with the tail of the board, and I'm scared of sharks. Especially when my wife is chumming the water with blood.
I guess I'll end up getting the Shinn skimboard as it's the closest thing to what I want, or at least think I want. Found one at kite-line.com in Bend, Oregon.
BTW, if you haven't heard of kite-line.com check this out:

My 5cents;
I really wanted to get a Shinn Skim, since I think it seems like a very good join between skim and surf. Now I could not get hold it in the US, I emailed them, and no reply. My only option was to get it shipped from the UK...and ended up becoming way to expensive. I'd only consider a skim board that could have optional straps...as I think the regular skimboards seems too limiting. I do know the local skimmers here are very good, and still watching them ride is very impressive...but then nothing new has been happening for the past few years. I wanted the UG skim, but I could not get a hold of it...I saw it first like 3 years ago..but no one could get hold of if.
So, the wakeskate I don't think is an option for me..it is sort of too much like a TT but not.
I ended up getting the 5'8'' UG surfboard, and I loved it...until I trid it in high winds and low winds...it was perfect in those average days...now I got the Naish 5'5'' Fish for light wind and waves, and a 5'4'' Quad for high winds and more powered waves. I still have the 5'8'' but I have not had it out since I got those other two boards. So my point if I can take out the Fish in super light winds, and I have a lot of fun on it. Even strapless the board is so much fun. If I were to get another board, I would either get a bigger surfboard or a the Shinn skim...I would not get one of those wakeskates...but that is just me.
In any case the fish is a very nice lightwind board...
hmm..this was alot of info. Do you have a place that sells them for a reasonable price?

hey..while I worked at Windwing we did a ton of research on skim, etc. and came up with an excellent board. We tested against the Cabal skim at the time, and it tracked better without fins than the Cabal with fins. We also retro fitted one of the Windwing boards with fin inserts and that was cool as well. Our experience showed that starting off on a skim with fins helps the learning curve, and then removing the fins once experience builds. The board was awesome - Divinycell Core, polyfibre wrap for the glass, hard rail and pin tail for killer action in the surf. Drop me a PM if you would like to know more information about where the boards were sourced. |

Didn't think any of the high-end Cabal boards had fins. The Cabal Fire was super fun on long downwinders - surfing 5 to 6 foot swells on our last trip in La Ventana (no issues tracking). Used to be a skate punk when I was kid and messing with this board in the sea foam and on the wet sand on the beach is pretty fricken fun.
2cents.
