Tue Sep 01, 15 11:33 pm Which kite(s) to bring to OSU over the winter? |
|
|
I'll be leaving for school at Oregon State University from Hood River in a few weeks. I definitely want to make weekend trips out to the south jetty of Newport to keep kiteboarding all fall/winter/spring. However, I'm in an economy triple room (meaning 3 people share a room meant for 2), and I don't have room to bring a bunch of stuff.
I have a 6m, 8m, and a 10m , but I'd only like to bring two at max. If I'm using a twin-tip at the coast, which kites would best suit the winds over winter/fall/spring at the coast?
Any information is greatly appreciated!
Thanks. |

Bring them all. From more mellow w winds for Siletz Bay sessions in the sPring, to 6m nuked out pre storm front sessions in November. |

10m if you only bring one...
but c'mon, I would sleep with my kites!! Get creative with some pullys and line, and hang them from the ceiling.

First rule which I have leaned painfully. Bring all your kites. How much space do they really take up. !! _________________ Take a breath; inhale |

Bring them all. Just pack that 6m in with the 10 m bag. Proper packing! They kite all year long. Only bring a cold weather wetsuit! |

Hi Mason,
For what it's worth, the locals (all 6-7 of them) ride primarily 9 & 12m kites, 90% of the time. Your mileage may vary. I bought a new 7m kite at the beginning of the summer and have only flown it twice.
Also this would be a good opportunity for you to get your directional shred on in the waves… I humbly suggest losing the twintip and getting a surfboard.
See you at Squirrels! |

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to figure something out to save space. I'm also bringing a surfboard (for surfing, not sure it'd work for kiting) in addition to camping rec gear. So I just want to "cut corners" where I can so I'm not taking up more than my share of space.
Would a 4-3 wetsuit (with a hood and gloves) be enough for the height of winter? I'd imagine you don't spend much time in the water while kiting, so I probably won't need anything thicker. But you never know what could happen out in the ocean. |

I would go with a 5/4 or better. That water gets cold. Shit does happen while kiting. You could spend quite a bit time in the water before getting in. The swims can be miserable with the bigger waves and rips. I have done several swims in the past windsurfing. One over a mile long by the time you get in. Grateful, I had 5/4 hooded surf suit to keep my head above water barely.
I use my whitewater kayak rule, plan for the worst, hope for the best. Last edited by Anthony on Thu Sep 03, 15 8:48 am; edited 1 time in total |

Ah college....
As another poster said hang it from the ceiling. Often those dorms are required to have sprinkler systems which neccesitate heavy ie non pvc water pipes which will mean you got solid attachments to the beams. That's a ton of space above just your bed alone. |

8m & 10m. Forget about Newport, hit up Siletz for the stormy winter sessions. PM Reaper356 for more details. I no longer live in the area, but we used to hit up Siletz for story winter sessions all the time when I was at OSU, that place rocks: http://nwkite.com/forums/t-7859.html |

Careful. If you have to imagine the scenario please note a winter ocean can and will kick your ass real quick. Have you kited in the ocean yet Mason? If you haven't, it's all good, but it ain't the same as being a river rat so make sure you're not alone. |

Yeah, I'll definitely be going with friends.
I'm a novice surfer, so I have some experience with the ocean around Manzo and Newport, but I realize that winter storms can also have massive waves that would be above anything I've done before. But I definitely wouldn't be surfing a pre-stormfront my first time out in the ocean. |

You'll want a 5/4/3 with an integral hood, and booties.
As some smart folks have posted on this forum before (excellent advice which I've taken to heart):

I don't see a down side to reducing bulk via storing kites long term in compressed state (straps/stuff sacks).
I store and travel w/three or four kites tighly packed in one high compression duffel bag.
Three pieces. One beach kite pack w/pump/harness, bar wet suit. One car gear bag with all kites & one board. |
