4 years ago while on the BEST RV Tour and immediately after the hurricane, Tony and I bought a lot in Rodanthe, NC about 5 miles north of Real and Waves. Since then, they have come up with funds and are going to start in 2016 building a bridge to bypass the wildlife area and road that keeps washing out in hurricanes. The state has chosen our lovely property to be part of the easements for the bridge and plans to take about 1/3 of it making it no longer build-able. At this time, they are planning to buy us out but we will be having to negotiate with them. More fun! I thought you would enjoy this pic.

Carolb,

Is that design finalized?

I had thought it was still in the study phase with other options under consideration as a result of the settlement between southern enviornmental law center SELC vs. NC DOT and others?

wow.....UGH !!! I've heard/read reports of a building a jug handle kinda bridge. I guess the needs of the many outweigh the needs of a few...
I have for the past several years rented a house on the sound on Cross of Honor Way....something in me said....cancel for next Spring...what a great area to kite/windsurf....looks like it's gonna be a bummer for this small select area if this bridge happens.
Sorry to hear about your loss...make it your advantage!!
Thumb's Up

Kassak,

We spent about 30 minutes on the phone with the NCDOT project manager last week and it sure sounds like that design is pretty final and the settlement agreement has all been worked out. The rendering we received is close but there will be some minor mods as to how far out it sweeps. It will be a good little flat water fishing hole inside the bridge but it doesn't look like it will be a good spot to kite anymore.

Tony

The bridge is a go and they have the $. They have had all their due diligent meetings and settled with the wildlife people so the north end is solid. What is still up is how far out they will go in the sound because of the underwater vegetation so the bridge may not arch out as much as shown. But either way, it is 95% locked into landing on our property. We spoke with the engineers and they were very nice and helpful and sent us lots of photos. It is going to be really hard for my neighbors and that neighborhood if you like to kite. Fishing is going to improve however. Some of those homes in that neighborhood are $500K and 6-8 bedroom Hatteras monsters. Thanks for all the pm's about it.

That's awful for Mirlo Beach and you Carol. Sorry to hear that. Was a nice little kite community away from the craziness of some of the other popular Hatteras launches.

I'm not in favor of this plan. Again...for some birds, several homeowners who used to have a beautiful unobstructed sunset (and a great place to kite) will now be staring at a bridge. Fantastic.

So are the using eminent domain to grab the property? Are you getting fair market value?

They said they would be doing a fair market value without a bridge impact. We were planning on selling anyways because we kite more around Buxton and Frisco which incidentally is where the liquor store is located. My realtor had a min dollar value and I won't have to pay a commission. Hopefully it all works out.
